Re: knock knock
I won't specifically promote a different community here.
My suggestion (which is what I do/did):
On Steam there is a [Texas ...TeamPlayers...] group, and a [Texas... TeamPlayers... TF2] group. You should be in both. That way, if someone starts a Priming event, your Steam client will tell you.
(Yeah, I know it's TPG now. Whadayagonnado?)
Offer friend requests to any TPG people you know in the TF2 group. Now your Steam client will tell you whenever one of them is in a game. You can join that game. You may visit some servers you like.
Of people I know who still play TF2 with some frequency are some of the MF! players, a couple SST players, and some of the Klutch players. That list isn't exhaustive, it's just who I've seen recently. sMOKe has been playing pretty frequently, and he wears a [TPG] tag (which is legit to do now, that's what I wear too). Vexon haunts some jump server, but I see him in regular games too. There are some non-clan TPGers I see now and then too. I have no idea who you're familiar with.
Next, use the Internet server browser to filter and sort by whatever your gaming preference is: ping, type of map, whatever. Try out something at the top of your sorted and filtered list. It didn't take me long to find 10 or so servers that offer consistently decent gaming (where 'decent' is whatever you decide it is).
When I play, the first thing I do is look to see if anyone I know is playing, and join them. Failing that I'll look at my favourites and pick whatever I'm in the mood for.
Some of the guys who still play regularly just use the QuickPlay option, so often a 'friend' is on a Valve server. Those tend to be less fun for me - unless there's some TPG regs to play with.
Nothing I've listed is Secret Sauce. For all I know you already do all those things.
See you in-game.
