Re: FOV (field of view) setting
Quick thought.  Have you considered using your mobo's mic port instead of your sound card's?
Edit:  Have you checked out the Asus soundcards?  They apparently offer their own version of 3D audio positioning [edit:  they actualy use something called Dolby Headphone].  Here is a newegg link to several of their cards.  Note that the cheap one has an HDMI adapter.

I use a computer till its burnt out (or cant run whatever game I really want). I used to play TF2 on a computer that got 30 FPS when I was alone and 5 when something was happening invoving fire. I love being able to use the highest graphics settings but hate spending oodles of money to upgrade every other week when something new comes out :P

A couple years after that, I will probably need to buy a new mobo and start from scratch. At least DDR3 will be faster than DDR2 and affordable by then :V

Re: FOV (field of view) setting
Yeh, I used to build a box no more than once every two years, and re-used as many parts as I could. Built a box in:
1999
2001
2003
2006
And I used the same 17" CRT from 1999 until 2006. In 2006 I replace it with a 19" 5:4 LCD and then in 2007 bought a 22" 16:9 display to go next to it (still at 1680x1050 here but that is high enough and easier on the graphics card budget). It used to be I never upgraded anything between builds but I bought an 8800GT in 2007 only one year after buying X19000XTX in 2006. I've been on a bit of a spending spree lately (though I certainly can afford it more than I could 7 years ago in college). I guess I'm about due for a new build sometime soon, although I can actually upgrade to pretty decent processor on same mobo for cheap, and get 4870 for cheap right now too. I think right now upgrading is cheaper than it used to be. I may not upgrade processor though, and wait for Nehalem instead. Any idea when it's hitting retail? I've heard reports varying from next month to Q4 2009.
And what does all this have to do with FOV?

But yeah, upgrading right now is pretty cheap and easy. Corsair has a line of terrific PSU's, Intel has good value in the mid and high end performance, Gigabyte makes good, cheap OC boards, ATI has some fantastic cards that are exceptionally cheap. I wonder when it will be worth upgrading to the Nehalem platform, assuming it is going to carry a price premium over what we already have.
