Issues with startmovie and endmovie

Ok I have some footage I want to convert into a avi using the startmovie command and I have tried many times to do it successfully. However, my end result always ends up being either a black blank movie that's 4 gb in size, or a jumbled mess that does not want to play properly.

Here are my computer specs...

Windows Vista 64 bit
4 GB RAM
Nvidia 9800 GT
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50 GHZ

I just don't know why it doesn't work, I use the xvid codecs and it still has problems. Any ideas?

it starts out as 4gb roughly in size but you need to throw it into a program that will compress it to the desired size/quality.

i used this tutorial http://www.ausgamers.com/features/read/2688825 and the middle part came out fine. the last few seconds were chopped and stuck at the beginning with weird colors, but the program said the file was corrupted so im not sure what caused it. havent tried a different file yet.
