They're fine in certain situations where you find yourself pushing a point and going 1v1 against another class. The reality is 100 metal isn't worth killing one person, and the mini-sentry (even with shotgun support) cannot engage or help the engineer take down multiple targets. You almost never find yourself in a 1v1 situation though, which means you need a gun that you can repair and use for multiple targets, mini-sentries are pretty useless right now.

Wrangled mini-sentries covering a point make about as much sense as a poopy-flavored lollipop.
Its still crazy to see a mini sentry take out 4 or 5 people in a row (usually on a pl map) because some players will get tunnel vision and dont even notice that they're getting chipped by a mini on the flank.

Mini-Sentries are effective on 5-CP maps, and even moreso when you have your team with you. Because you can just drop a sentry, let it do its work, and you run about with your shotgun or pistol and deal out extra damage. I find Gunslinger Engineers frustrating to backstab and headshot, because they don't work behind a gun, and the extra health throws off my normal headshot killing.

No it doesn't? The gunslinger adds only 25 HP, raising the engineer to 150 hp. An uncharged headshot does 150 damage flat. Gunslinger or not the wanker dies in one hit easy.

i LOVE it; it's my preferred loadout with the wrangler; but the wrangler has it's benifits and negatives vs. the pistol. I think the wrangle is useful cause 9 times out of 10 you won't use your pistol to kill people anyway; however, I'm rethinking this because the pistol is perfect for KILLING mini-sentries and other stuff at range so it might be the best loadout to go with the pistol. when I use the pistol I take out a lot of sentries from range. The reason I like the wrangle with mini-sentry now is I can kill with it if people are out of range and it's otherwise not doing anything or if people are running away.
People need to realize the mini-sentry is for killing already damaged people; it's a finisher. You're the primary weapon.
The way I use the mini sentries is like throwaways, I'm not worried about metal there's usually plenty of that. I throw one down in the area we're in, fight with the shotgun if needed, throw down a dispenser, then move forward iwth the team; rebuild in a forward position etc., leaving a dispenser in the last held position and moving that up 1 step behind the sentry positions/team positions. you have to be confident with the shotgun.
I'll have to try sleepy's advice about letting the sentry finish people off, it's risky but could result in more crits. I guess if I have a few crits i wouldn't worry about it it's probably more important to ensure you kill your enemy. I've found myself a MVP in this load-out quite a few times so I don't see it as such a bad decision for engie, and what I love most about it is if a spy saps my sentry I could give a crap I was going to destroy it in a few seconds anyway. this really lessens the frustration of playing engie for me, where a spy can take out your stuff that you've worked so long to scavenge metal and build up. Battle Engie just shrugs that stuff off and moves with the team more. The only way the spies can frustrate me now is with my (all important) level 3 tele's.
A damage bonus/upgrade/update would be heavenly! I certainly wouldn't complain. I don't think mini's need to build faster, maybe shoot faster to compliment a damage buff. I don't have any faith this will ever happen though so I'm not getting my hopes up.Last edited by Oozish; 07-25-10 at 12:17 PM.
