Thread: Demos and the Replay Editor

I recently posted this on Gotfrag but I was told by my friend *cough* masterpainb *cough* to post it here too so...

"So I was messing around with the replay editor for the last hour or so and I figured out how to import my own demos into it. I'm not sure if this is common knowledge but here's how.

1) Record a demo then copy it into your tf/replay/client/replays folder.

2) Create a .dmx file in wordpad/whatever and copy this template in: http://snipt.org/xWgk (I included comments in the template so you can experiment with the values yourself)

3) Save this .dmx file as replay_x.dmx where x is a unique integer (unique from any other .dmx files in your folder)

4) Launch tf2, go to the replay editor, and go to your file.

5) Start editing and here's where the tricky part comes in. If the demo starts spectating you, then there's no problem; however, if it starts at some random point in the map then you need to follow some different steps

6 - Spectating you) Just do the standard replay editing, start point - play - end point - save - render

6 - Spectating a random point)
-Set the start and end point of the replay then save the take.
-Go into the take you just saved, pause, then click to go back to the beginning.
-It should be paused at the beginning, click your name, then first person, and then the red recording light in the top right should come on.
-Play that replay until the end, save the take, then replay that take and it should be in first person

7) Success! Hopefully. Render whatever you made and it should be working. It's pretty much a nice interface to record demos in max quality without any extra configs and an easy way to upload to youtube.

Some notes:
-Remember to turn back on viewmodels if you want them or else this happens:

-If your replay starts spectating a random point, even after you record in first person you'll still have a second or two of the game spectating that point, so take that into account when recording your demo.
-Changing player_slot does nothing to change what you spectate initially.
-I know there are some other posts online that show how to do this but I wanted to post something a little more comprehensive."


Also this only works for first person and it's untested for stv

I dominated Waffle all the time in the beginning. Then he made sad face, so from that day on I let him frag me occasionally so if you see that happen in server don't be surprised.
