"TF2 being free" is the issue.. a new player coming in with an equivalent skill as my own WILL lose regardless of this being a team game. In-fact a lot of the new items are team based. "Buff banner, soldier whip, piss in a jar, milk in a jaw, fan of war etc... so while I still would beat my vanilla-clone 1v1 a match of 6 vanilla-worcmai's vs 6 PAY-TO-PLAY-worcmai's would also win. It's rather simple.. you may say "oh... but you've played so long you have all these items and loads of metal to craft..." no I do not.. Infact I quit TF2 right when items/crafting started booming so its a huge uphill battle still to this day to acquire/craft all new items when you have 4 year vets. There is NO possible way to argue that newer items do not give you an advantage thats a load of crock. There are several items which I could list that are without a doubt better than vanilla.. a few of them have already been listed.

On a different note.. yes I do love the new items and creativity behind them, I started playing heavy often because of them which I never used to. It keeps the game alive for sure. The novelty of not being able to acquire the items immediately is also a good note, it keeps users pinned to the chair and have a sense of "reward" when getting them, but the system should be different, not "IDLE-FOR-YEARS-TO-PLAY" nor "PAY-TO-PLAY". Paying for hats and such is a good idea ofcourse.. cuz you're not "buying" skill, you're buying things that look coo, like my nike shoe!
I really don't see the problem. COD games (and others) implement a system where you have to gain levels to unlock the good equipment, all the while you're at a severe disadvantage going up against the max levels. At least here, someone can trade you some items, or you can craft, or buy the weapons if you so choose. The vanilla weapons are far from a handicap. Of course, there are items that are straight upgrades, but a lot of them are the melees. The difference isn't nearly as severe as you, and others, make it out to be. Not by a long shot.

Some of the newer weapons would actually be a detriment to new players, as they would fail to learn some of the basics of the class. Especially if they started out with the new rocket launchers. By the time they get the basics down, they should have found enough stuff to trade for what they want for the main classes that they use, and go from there.

Actualy my pyro mostly uses basic flamethrower and shotgun. Cant use the flaregun effectively so the biggest benefit of the degreaser is gone and the backburner is stupid. Although I cant reflect well either, so I could just go backburner... hmmm.... My heavy cycles through all the guns cause I never really play heavy so I try and find what I like each time I pull him outa the seatcushions. Soldier is almost all vanilla, and ya, I loose to the soldiers who are really good at air shotting but ask around and 4 out of 5 medics will agree, I hold my own.

personally, its not really that new players are at a disadvantage, but that a lot of the weapons detract from the games feel. I'm a person that doesn't like a lot of change, so my opinion comes from that. Change is awesome in the form on good change, but for example, the weapons don't match the games feel. I always thought of TF2 before the unlocks as a INCREDIBLY balanced, unique FPS game. There was nothing like it. There really isn't anything like it still. But the games feel seems to have moved on to "RPG silly combat" which I don't like :/. Like, jar of piss? really? or a jar or milk? a dead fish? it's too silly. And if people are even complaining about balance issues then something is amiss. Before, the only thing people complained about was demo and pyro. Now, APPARENTLY, almost every class has something to complain about D: (I haven't played TF2 for a few months) I also think it feels uncomfortable because there's always a feeling now that someone has something that I don't, or theres something that I have to get. I personally don't play TF2 for the feeling that I always have to work to get the next best thing D: If that were so, I'd go play Eve.

I posted this somewhere else, but Valve basically had a really clean, well designed wedding cake, and they sprinkled jelly beans over it. (Yahtzee review ftw!) Hmmm maybe it was just the lack of all night friday night fights or tons of ttp pick up games that turned me away :/

oh well, TF2 is a great game, and its not "dead" but I don't think it's as good as it once was. oh well!
Me: "But the Gunslinger is so much more fun..."
Langrad: "We're here to win, not to..."
    Me: "Have fun?" "Hahaha"

Re: Team Fortress 2... I hate you.

TF2's different, these days. New players and new weapons are sending some older players away. I mostly laugh, because it's a game, and now a days, if you don't enjoy it, there's no reason to play it. You play to win, sure, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate the wackiness that they've put into it. Some of the things are creative, or at least amuse me until the game mechanics of the weapons pop in (Liberty Launcher eats me as a Spy - I used to be able to get away from the regular launcher 40-50% of the time).
