Re: Gimmie Tips and Tricks!
Welcome to the forums Fishy!
I also thought auto heal was 'bad' when I first started playing medic. After some serious medic playing, my hand started hurting after hours of intense holding M1 down and my mouse's M1 button broke as well. That is when I switched to auto heal ;].

Re: Gimmie Tips and Tricks!
For the record, masterpain and Interests are little girls. Don't let the weakness of their right index fingers persuade you.
---TR_WALKWAY---
One more tip I had for you for the time being. There is a great community made training map called tr_walkway_rc2 that helps you fine tune your aim. If you have damage numbers enabled (and you are a fool if you don't) it gives you a good idea of how much damage you will do with each shot (which is critical for judging if you are likely to win a firefight.)
I have been working on soldier for a bit now, and I think this map is fabulous for teaching how to bounce and airshot as a soldier.
Bouncing is simply shooting at the feet of an enemy so that he bounces in the air. This effectively immobilizes him. The safe thing to do at that point is to simply shoot at the ground where he will land. You will find that most classes are two shottable in this manner. If you want to be fancier, you can attempt to shoot them out of the air, since their arc is very predictable. I would recommend the former though until you are more comfortable with the rocket's speed since shooting hte ground virtually assures you of doing more damage, the mid-air just does it faster.
Airshotting, is the most fun part of being a soldier. You shoot people out of the sky as they try to jump at you. This map has a launch pad that will conveniently fling the bots into the air so you can try and hit them. Not the easiest skill to master, but a great feeling when you pull it off in-game.
NOTE: both airshots and bouncing can be done as a demo, but its somewhat harder (at least for me.)
This video shows off what the map can do:
0:20 - shows bouncing as soldier
0:30 - shows how you have to aim as a medic, as you can see its often several or many feet in front of the target
1:12 - shows how to practice reflecting projectiles as a pyro
1:50 - shows how to practice airshots as a soldier or demo
The video also show sniping, side-stabbing and stair-stabbing as a spy.
One last thing I have to say at the moment is that virtually all the classes in the game are really close quarters fighting classes. Just because the soldier has a RL doesn't mean you should sit back and spam from a mile away. Up close a RL does 100 damage to an enemy, and since 8 out of 9 classes have <= 200 hp, that means a soldier can 2 shot most classes up close. Practicing on tr_walkway highlights how easy it is to kill classes when you commit to getting in their faces.Last edited by DrHaphazard; 07-31-11 at 05:43 PM.
