I like hats because no one else has them. Obviously, that isn't 100% true, but it summarizes my viewpoint. Some hats are rare and allow you to have (and show off) something that perhaps no one else on your server has. It allows you to customize the your avatar and be unique... until everyone else gets the same hat that you have.
