Thread: Code Contribution Policy

If you want to support lonestar by contributing code, there are a couple of
policies that must be followed.

1) The submitted code must be your own original work, or must be code under an
open-source license that allows it to be relicensed under the license of this
product when it is combined with this product.

2) The legal copyright of any original code you submit must be assigned to
Tim Thelin

The whole point of the above is to make sure we don't run into legal issues
down the line.

First off, we need to make sure all of the code in the product is legally
allowed to be there. We're trying to make sure contributors do not copy
other people's work and put it in the product unless they have legal
permission to do so.

Next, is the issue of copyright. Copyright must be assigned to a legal
entity (person, company, corporation, etc), and copyright gets harder to
deal with when more than one entity holds it. For instance if you had
to change license terms (e.g. move to GPLv4) it involves getting the
permission of every copyright holder, and what if someone is no longer
reachable? So for now, the best solution is to just assign copyright
to a single person (the lead developer - Tim Thelin).

Please understand that we have no intention of discrediting people, we just
want to make sure we're being diligent and planning ahead to avoid future
problems.

To give people the credit they deserve, we have a CREDITS.txt file that lists
all of the team members and any other people that contribute.
