You can run it on just about anything, the problem is how well.
Xp needs less memory so it may run a tiny bit better. My crappy laptop with vista runs it although with most effects off.
I would say that I prefer it on my gaming pc as I get no lag.
If you decide to go for it keep the crappy graphics in mind.;)

Feenicks,
My feeling is that it won't matter much if you use Vista or XP, being as you are using a laptop.
A large number of people who are attempting to run the game on a laptop or notebook have posted here and are having problems. Many laptops just can't run the game well, usually because the graphics card is not powerful enough.
Would you experience a performance increase by using XP instead of Vista?
Probably.
Would that performance increase help the game run better?
Maybe.
But it might not be enough of a performance increase to make much difference.
Left 4 Dead is a resource hog, more so (in my opinion) than other Valve games. Just because someone can play HL2, or CSS just fine in their laptop does not mean they can play L4D.
If you want to roll the dice, put XP on the machine and give it a try. But I would start off with all your settings as low as they can go and see how it works. If it seems OK, then gradually increase your settings from there.
If it were me that had your computer, I would not try to make L4D work on it, based on the information I have seen here over the past year.
Good luck!*********************************
