I'd have to say if L4D went into RPG I'd toss the game. I agree with the shortening of Levels and the add more objectives idea is nice. However, going into each building to secure it is just as repetitive as the game already is dude so steer away from doing the same thing. It gets a little old pulling levers that make loud sounds and a horde shows up. Add some variety into what the Survivors would need to do. I think you got a nice start with the Scavenge for filling up the car to escape in Dead Center. It was a good direction but make it more threw out the campaign and not just an escape method. Put a story line into the campaign some not just a "movie" relation story line then you play. Make a few small cut scenes cause some interaction with the Survivors and the environment.

I Respectfully Disagree
Simply put, I found this thread by googling "L4D2 RPG Mod", so I respectfully disagree that Left 4 Dead 2 would be worse off for having role playing game elements, specifically character growth in the areas of aptitudes, skills, personalizations, fortifications, and resources - all of which I might note are things that L4D2 added to a small degree that I felt was lacking in the original L4D to begin with.
Where I differ with the original poster, BrainEater, is on the type of RPG elements he seems to be advocating, which remind me of Final Fantasy stats. I would hope more for the point buy system that can be found in the PC game Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines or as others noted Fallout ... also notable in P&P game I enjoy, Shadowrun.
This means that this I agree with:
For example if we had to rid a town of zombies we would have to secure each building in the town like houses, stores, town hall, churches etc. Also we can find new weapons and ammo at gun, hardware and sporting good stores. We can also make weapons out of things found in these stores. We can find health and food @ hostpitals, grocery stores, corner stores and pharmacies. You would be aloud to have a back pack where you can carry...
Which is exactly why I still look around for a mod for L4D 1 or 2 that would make use of the polish in L4D to really put on a good survival, character growth building game. And Borderlands just doesn't come anywhere even close, unless you are talking Diablo style Action RPG.
In the mean time, I am keeping my eye on things like the development and completion of various zombie mods and pc games, like DoubleBear's interimly titled "ZRPG" or reading news articles about things like the game that never was from Irrational
Just because you haven't played a good RPG or Zombie or Survival game, doesn't mean they shouldn't exist.
