    Vent / Cross-Squad Comms

Since this was brought up in another thread and I don't want to contaminate that thread with my insane musings...

Cross squad communications... THAT seems to be the way to stick it to the baddies as long as there's multiple squads led by {HRD}.

BUT... and I stress this is only a discussion as I don't want this dipping into the accusations and name-calling arena... Based on the thread in the BF2 server area... Wouldn't that constitute cheating? *I* personally don't think so, but I don't think a mouse that allows on-the-fly dpi changes (which I use when hopping in a turreted vehicle) or a gamer-keyboard allowing macros is cheating either. But wouldn't, under the loose definition in that thread, cross-squad communications using a program outside of the game itself, constitute cheating?

Again... Just thought this was an interesting topic given the other thread and has no connotations beyond people's personal opinions because I'm relatively sure it's NOT, by the admins, considered cheating. What's everyone's personal opinions on this?

Mine? Use every tactic short of hacks and exploits to win. Vent is a tool, like good mice and keyboards. A mic may not be available to everyone, but it's a tool that players use to CERTAINLY enhance their squad's effectiveness in-game. Full team communication with vent is just an extension of that.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

Personally I only use vent in our TWL matches. We started this because some of the hosting servers did not have voip. It can get confusing at times when you hear cross talk from squads when you don't recognize voices and the descriptions are not clear. Like "Watch out for the guy behind the wall at the flag". You start to wonder is that a SM or another squad at a different flag if you don't recognize the voice.

On the TTP server voip is enough for me. I relay all info through the commander or just spot things out on the map to let people know. It is rare there are ever more than 1 or 2 HRD squads on the same team anyway.

No, I had this discussion with the bigman himself.

In games like CSS, where when you die you cannot respawn, but you can spectate, you can cheat. BF2's built in comms are active, dead or alive, so the advantage of "ghosting" is available whether you use an external communication system or not. But the action is so fast paced no one (I know) seems to exploit that fact.

As far as cross-squad communication; we in HRD have rarely used it for that. But a clan I was in previously did, and I have seen it used very effectively to coordinate the actions of two squads or a full ground squad and an air group.

I think it is something some of us who hang out in the vent ought to use more often in HRD.

You can report enemy movements, execute double envelopment effectively, report that some bad guys just got popped and will be respawning at x-flag so the other squad can harry the retreat, etc. The possibilities are endless. I imagine future BF games will have a more developed comm system like that.

One problem is, that if LOTS of people are babbling on the vent, it can really interfere with intrasquad communication. The vent should only be used for the occasional gloat (when you take out another HRD) or for brief communications.

If someone in {HRD} is on the enemy team. I let them know I'm hunting for them, and I usually complain when they kill me. I'd think it would be hard to Cheat with 30 player per team and non stop action. Except more maybe in the jets.

Well, IMO, it's only cheating if you "cheating".

It's communication otherwise. Weather it be the Cell phone, the X-fire, or simply a friend playing on a machine next to you... it's only communication.

However, the bad players can and will use this level of communication for cheating. You've got to be vigolant to be able to determine between the two.

I also only use it for communication in TWL matches and practices. Other wise, for me, it becomes too distracting.. It tends to overpower in-game voip, so I have trouble communicating with my squad.

I do enjoy using it for just messing around tho, taunting other {HRD} guys, laughing about something dex said, that kinda thing.
