Looking into this game
I have been researching this game recently and am dl'ing the demo now. I have a few questions if you can spare some answers.
Because I eventually intend to go PvP, and would like to do some Merc work, I am considering the Caldari race, Civire.
Good choice, bad, so-so?
And what skills would you recommend as the best to start training on at this early stage?
About how long does it usually take to build a moderately competent character in either PvE or PvP?
I am very interested, and extremely curious as to your opinions. Thanks

Race has very little impact on your toon as any race can cross-train to fly another race's ships.
If you plan to be in the game for a while focus on learning skills. Get all of them that you can to lvl 4, including the T2s, so that you learn everything else faster. Also Cybernetics, so you can get implants. If you are not sure if you will stick around then don't worry about those.
DL EVEMon, and look at the different ships and setups. It will tell you exactly what you need to learn to pilot it, and exactly how long it will take.

For a fairly competent frigate pilot, it would take about 20-30 days before you should expect to win any fight, but you sure can build a cheap little frigate and have a shot at any point.
the most frustrating thing about starting a new character is learning skills, practically the first week a least is taken by learning skills, and you should plan for two weeks for all the training skills to reach level 4. after that it's smooth sailing into your ship and fittings. so start out by training what you need to fit out your pvp frigate, and then get on the learning skills.
after that, you just need to find a corporation that's going to get you into combat on day one, so join the recruitment chat and say,"New pilot, trial/subscribed account, looking for PVP corporation." and if you aren't joining your corporation/alliance in PVP that day, find another one.
Note: Corporations like to recruit subscribers, so if your on a trial account it will be slim pickings.

Re: Looking into this game
Okay, so I DL'd the demo and immersed myself in it for an entire weekend, and man can things ever go so bad as to not know what you're doing. I've lost two ships, built up a small fortune, only to lose it all when my ship was blown apart.
Currently have a Merlin, which is a pretty cool little boat, and I'm training like crazy to get skills up to make it worthwhile. Shielding is a problem, but this Merlin can dish it out and take some in return.
Load-out includes 2-small rail turrets, and two malkuth rocket launchers, and depleted uranium charges. Have blueprints for the rockets so i make them myself.
I'm trained up to level 3 on most everything urgent, and am working on some of the more specialized skills. Since I intend to take a militaristic path I'm focused on those skills needed for combat op's.
I'm going to see how well the demo goes before commiting 100%, but at this juncture, it looks like I will get into it full scale.
