Black Screen - Monitor says 'no signal'
Hello
I've been playing Left 4 Dead on my computer since it was released and at the beginning there were absolutely no problems. However, recently I suddenly get a black screen while playing, sometimes there's sound-loop in the background and sometimes I just can't hear anything anymore but everytime my monitor signals that it has no input anymore.
This happens almost every time I'm playing but there does not seem to be a regularity in it. All I can say is that it mainly seems to happen on the 3rd map of a campaign (especially in No Mercy and Dead Air... but maybe thats just how it seems to me because I preferably play these campaigns).
To give an example: I played together with some friends and the error occured at the end of No Mercy - Map 3. After rebooting my PC, I reconnected and just after 1 minute on map 4, the same thing happened again.
Today I played Dead Air and it happened in the first 5 minutes of map 3. I rebooted my PC and just to test it I started directly from map 3 in singleplayer mode and I could play it to the end without any trouble.
I have been looking around a bit for similar problems but couldn't find a specific solution approach. All I did was checking for the basic stuff:
- My drivers are up to date. I use a GForce 8800GTS and I even tried to
use
an older 18X... driver but with the same result.
- It's not a temperature issue. I checked the temperature of the graphics card,
CPU and Mainboard several times while playing and they are all normal.
- I set the shader-detail to medium but the error still occurs.
I think that is all I can say to my problem. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions. I will attach a DxDiag to my post.

Well, the fact that your monitor gives you a no input message concerns me. I suppose it could be a driver issue, but I think I would start with the hardware end of it first. I would shut everything down, pull your video card and make sure the edge connector is clean, then blow out the card slot on the mobo. Once you have re-assembled the PC, double check the cable, both the end that connects to the video card as well as the end that hooks to the monitor.
I would also delete your video card from your system, delete any old driver stuff, then let it reinstall itself and use the latest drivers.
You might also try deleting the VIDEO.TXT file in your CFG folder and let it recreate itself. This should put your display settings back to the defaults. Then go into your graphics options in the game and put them back to the way you had them.
You say you already checked and heat buildup is not an issue.*********************************

It could be your PSU (Power Supply Unit) needs changing. They arent expensive, around £15-50 depending on what power you want/need.
It will start when you are running games, especially ones that require alot of power from your computer. But eventually it will happen while you are browsing and then not come on at all.

I recently "cleaned" the inside of my PC, including the graphics card and also the mainboard. I also removed older drivers before installing the new ones... used 'Driver Sweeper' to prevent any interference with older files.
Also, this error does not occur in any other games I have installed (some older games but also new ones)... they all run fine so if it was a defect in a technical device, I think not only L4D would be concerned.
