Thread: Do I need a new laptop?

Do I need a new laptop?
The keep it short, should I float the expense to pick up a new laptop?
I currently use my unit for creating documents for classes, movies for when I get kicked out by my roommate or plane rides, small graphic creations, and gaming on the weekends.
I currently have a TOSHIBA Satellite
Intel Celeron CPU 1.86 ghz
DDR3 RAM 2 gb
Vista 32 bit
Internal HDD 110 gb
Intel 965 Express 358 mb 1280x 800 32 bit 60Hz
15 inch LCD
Im thinking about TOSHIBA Satellite C655D-S5087
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834214025
AMD V Series V140 2.3 Ghz
DDR3 3GB
Hard drive 320 GB
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI Radeon 4250 256-1405 graphics memory
15.6 LCD
The new laptop is only 399.99 on newegg, 474 from Toshiba.
My old seems to have speakers that are on there way out.
The SD card slot doesn’t work anymore.
I am getting bored playing my uber old games.
My hard drive is getting full.
My old one cost 400.
Perhaps I can get 200 for my old one to make the new only a 200 dollar hit.
However;
Although it can be slow, the old one still works fine.
The access to newer games would be a distraction from classes.
That’s still 400 dollars, when I just spend 637.70 on books.Last edited by SovietDooM; 01-25-11 at 09:46 AM.

Re: Do I need a new laptop?
I would wager he would see a difference in performance. Switching from Vista to 7 and the added ram would be the major factors, BUT since its a single core processor, the abilities of this computer for even moderate gaming or multi tasking would be severly limited IMO. I would look at something with a dual core, perhaps a refurbished/recirtified notebook to stay in that price range.

I would say save your money to get something better (or build a budget desktop which would blow the laptops out of the water and be just as cheap). Main reasoning, to me, was the $600 dollars in books, as well as the fact you are worried about newer games distracting you. If the old one is capable enough to work for your needs, I'd say it is better to live with it and use the extra money for food etc.

Re: Do I need a new laptop?
Well I already have an uber desktop, I did think about the I don't believe I can swap out the CPU on in. There were a few you could customize on their site but $100 more for and i3 series with, I beleive, 2.5 GHz didn't seem worth it. My gaming abilities should go from Battlefield 1942, Morrowind, and Tiberium dawn to Oblivion, F.E.A.R., Bf2, Left 4 Dead, and Tiberium Wars.

Re: Do I need a new laptop?
Well, it's here.... not the toshiba
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS5552-5898 Notebook AMD Phenom II Triple-Core N830(2.1GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon HD 4250
It is an Acer which I'm not all that thrilled about, a mono speaker, and no dedicated sound card. But my stereo laptop speakers suck to begin with when I'm use to Monsoon 5.1 surround, and I can always buy a Creative USB sound card for 40.
I'm liking the triple core, 4 gb ram, 500 gb HD, and ATI 4250.
Will I be playing crisis on it? No, but I'll get alot more then just Morrowind and Battlefield 1942.
SO... BF2 and L4D are now on the table for me when I'm on campus!Dispatch the DooM
