    SSD: Huge improvement

So after saying I wasn't planning any upgrades for a year or two my hard drive decides to die. I had three weeks left on the warranty so got a new regular hard drive but ended up putting in a Samsung SSD.

Got to test it out last night and it roxors! I was only getting an average of 100mbps read/writes now I'm getting 238mbps with .283ms response times whereas with the regular hard drive I was getting 44ms.

My Windows Experience Score went from a 5.3 to a 7.2 just migrating to the new drive.

I've been using SSDs in my Macs for quite some time and love the boot times. I wasn't sure how well Win7 would do based on reading various horror stories from folks but so far so good. Never going back to a regular HD.

By the way, good testing program is www.hdtunepro.com and you can use it free for 15 days then you have to purchase.

So out of curiosity is it possible to partition your OS to a SSD without having to reformat your regular hard drive? I really one a SSD for the load times but I don't want to reformat unless I absolutely have to.

You can clone your OS image from your HD to the SSD, but it's definitely recommended to re-load Win7 if you move to a SSD. Win7 installs itself slightly different to a SSD vs HD to eek out better boot performance.

I've had an SSD for a year now and have loved every moment with it! I have a 60gb Kingston that is a wonderful piece of work!

Words are only limited to the effable, while the indescribable is merely found within ourselves.

If you have to do an upgrade I think this one is money well spent.

SSDs are not "cheap" but they are cheaper than they used to be. A 64gb (or 60gb) is about $130 now. That's sufficient for most as a boot drive, got one in my laptop. 32gb are like $75 and that's good enough for a OS boot drive. 120gb (128gb) is around $170-200. They can get up to $300, those are the overpriced OCZ Vertex 3.

As for benefits. TDP is one, if you use HTPC's SSDs consume MUCH less power than HDDs. You get much faster boots, my dads Vertex 2 boots in about 20 seconds since he doesn't really have anything other than Avast and Malwarebytes. You also get faster load times, though it is unnoticeable in games. You do get them.
