Re: Horror for people who hate horror
There are several that I like. However, most of them have been covered here. The Exorcist and Jaws are definitely a must see for you Ceb. Sabrina and I watched "The Perfect Host" which, not billed as a horror flick, still has that twist to it. Ceb, you would love it!

Re: Horror for people who hate horror
The Ring was scary and had a good plot with nice spooky sets, involvement with the characters and a good mystery. (71% on rottentomatoes)
The Descent (2005) was really good. Don't watch it on TV, because they have the craziest cut that actually changes the ending! (84% on rottentomatoes)
Pan's Labyrinth and The Ophanage (Orfanato) are both in Spanish but are just fine to watch subtitled, and are soooo good. The Orphanage is a reaaaally good movie/horror movie. El Orfanato (The Orphanage) - Rotten Tomatoes 85% on rottentomatoes! Pan's Labyrinth actually had 95%.
All of these movies avoid the pitfalls you described (which, I agree, do apply to a LOT of horror). You will enjoy them even if they don't scare you... but they have a good chance of scaring you!Last edited by Toad; 01-23-12 at 06:00 PM.

Re: Horror for people who hate horror
I love me some movies. For horror or elements of horror/all around great flicks. A decent straight horror flick would be movies like the first Freddie Krueger, or the first Hellraiser. My favorite movies are the ones that just carry the dark side over or have sci fi elements. One of my favorite movies of all time is "The Thing" from 1982, creepy and disturbing. Scenes in that movie make you go "wtf". Another strange classic is "Videodrome" from 83. When I was a kid, I had the most nightmares from stephen king's "IT".
