Re: Horror for people who hate horror
Not a huge horror fan. I am more of a suspense/thriller aficionado. Couple mentioned in here are good ones.
The Ring,
The Descent (only #1 imo),
Jaws (only #1 imo),
Exorcist (only #1 imo)
Pan Labyrinth was good and creepy.
Almost watched the Perfect Host on Netflix last weekend. Might have to give a go coming up.
Hellraiser (only #1 imo)
Jason/Elm Street/Halloween....meh campy slasher flick sonly concerned with blood and boobs.
Refuse to watch any of the SAW movies, or the Hills have Eyes simply because they appear to only be concerned with displaying the most depraved method of death and dismemberment. Not my cup o tea.

Re: Horror for people who hate horror
Okay, will have to add the Ring and Descent onto my list of flicks to see. Pan's Labyrinth I have seen and also wouldn't classify as a horror movie, or even really suspense. To me that was more like a dark version of C.S Lewis' Lion, Witch, Wardrobe.
Jaws and Exorcist I never really had much interest in but for pop cultural education ("We're gonna need a bigger boat") I might have to invest the time. What I'm afraid of, especially with regard to Jaws, is that I've been spoiled by CGI and special fx from other movies and it'll just look too campy to me.
Hellraiser always struck me as a gorefest, and seeing as how there've been so many sequels it's very likely that my arguments regarding hope and sympathetic characters come into play.
John Carpenter's The Thing was great! That's another one I sat and watched with Kilo if I'm not mistaken. I wouldn't have called that a horror movie at the time, though I suppose it does in fact qualify. Kirk Russel always made it an adventure, no matter what he was in. Carpenter also turned out a vampire flick that I saw with Kilo and his wife that had us all rolling for weeks afterward. "Hey John... John... lemme ask you somethin. When you put a stake through the heart of that vampire... didja get a little wood?" "Oh yeah... major chubby...."
One of the EXTREMELY campy movies that I never mentioned but found myself laughing at was PuppetMaster Puppetmaster (Video 1989) - IMDb . Anyone see this series? In the first one the puppets are bad, but in some sequels they're actually supposed to be the 'good' guys. Mouth from Goonies even stars in one of the sequels. They're definitely late night popcorn flicks when the only other thing on is infomercials.
Another first that I didn't see mentioned here but that had quite a few sequels are the Chucky flicks. I've seen bits and pieces of quite a few of these but never had occasion to sit down and watch one start to finish. I remember seeing commercials of people coming out of the theatre after having seen Chucky, swearing up and down that it was terrifying, but what pieces of it I saw never really got the juices flowing.Defend Truth with Violence

Army of Darkness?
Ok, that is not really horror. I do really agree with cebelius as far as House and Cube goes. I also think the first 3 Alien movies should make this list and Critters 1 and 2 should be here along with Tremors 1,2 and 4.

Re: Horror for people who hate horror
Well, only one movie ever creeped me out... EVERY time i've seen it, and that is Event Horizon. AWESOME movie in the vein of the types of titles that you are throwing out there. I don't go too much for the gory dismembered body type slasher flicks, guess I have seen to many limbs without thier owners and owners without their limbs IRL to be too moved by the fake stuff. Check out Event Horizon for something that has just enough gore to shock in small controlled doses and a mainline of mind twist to keep you going NO WAY - the entire way through.

Event Horizon did scare the crap out of me when I saw it, but it falls very firmly under the heading "No hope, bad ending." Alien at least ended well while maintaining the tragedy of the situation.
Ditto The Thing, which though it ended on a note of grim finality, at least it was also a grim victory. (we'll never know if that other fellow had become a Thing or not, but I have no doubt whatsoever that if he had Mr. Russel would have made short work of it.
In Event Horizon... the ending suggests that the action throughout the entire movie was completely futile.Defend Truth with Violence
