    This isn't a positive trend

I realize that the xfire tracking is not as representative because not as many people use it as in the past, however I don't think that the xfire user base is significantly different from the majority of the BF3 PC population for that distinction to matter.

i think the amount not on Xfire does matter since i would say that would be probably a substantial amount of people considering xfires lack of necessity these days. the margin of missing players here is probably in the thousands because of this. in the end though you are correct. as to why this has happened well i you can never be quite sure but for me personally as to why i havent played in a couple of months is because literally Star Wars. a PC exclusive title is sure to take a lot of those guys away from BF3 PC. however as for overall players throughout all platforms i would say the number of people playing BF3 is much much higher. but i know no one really counts consoles with this sort of game. i think though i could go for years as to why this game isnt boasting bigger numbers with numerous reason and explanations but at risk of making this post way to long i wont. in any case i wish the same as everyone else that the game was boasting some gigantic numbers but its a game and what we forget is over time your numbers always dwindle down to your core fan audience no mater what.

I haven't used xfire in ages... I didn't know anyone still did.

That being said, the player count dropping ~25% among users who run xfire is a pretty horrible decline. Unless there was some bug that causes crashing with BF3 running xfire, I would think it is pretty representative of a portion of the community at the very least.

I dont really find it surprising. I would imagine it will level off somewhat, then slowly diminish over time with a few spikes here and there in accordance with DLCs. Its a shame, this is what i would expect from something other than a BF title, but since what we actually got is anything but a BF successor, i guess that graph is par for the course.

Actually, they've not gotten BF3 support into Xfire working correctly and it does cause crashes if you enable it (via editing a .ini file). So I'd wager no one even launches Xfire anymore. I know I stopped.

I launch xfire. No crashing. It doesn't overlay into BF3 - but it does detect that I am running it and I can see others in my friends list running it as well from time to time.

The allure of shiny new graphics is wearing off and people are getting bored of this game, IMO. No amount of DLCs is going to add to the longevity, again IMO.

well i wouldnt say anything to you about the BF successor thing because i disagree but i would say that is correct with the activity levels. you will see the jumps when something new comes along and then steadily level out like every other game. but i think some people want BF3 to boast the monolithic numbers that COD does and that just simply cant happen. COD is a casual game for the casual audience. their game is much easier to play and much easier to be accepted by the majority of other people in your life. BF3 is a totally different animal as we all know and you can not pick it up as easily as you can with COD. COD is also almost mindless and you alone can determine the outcome of the match where as in BF3 you need a strategic mind and the will to help your team in order to win. its simple really people are selfish and they want to do the cool things (i would go so far as to say that COD has increased this problem) and not help anyone else out.

so in conclusion the numbers BF3 is still pretty substantial considering

Right, out of the box it doesn't do overlay, but if you modify one of the ini files it does... and it crashes frequently.
