Re: WTF is the point...
This is what I believe they are doing. Microsoft and Apple are both moving this way too. Instead of purchasing software we will be "renting" it and with the cloud, one may not even have a full/complete install on your computer ... the software will reside in the cloud and you'll pay to use it. I'm not a fan of this trend (from a user standpoint), but I think it is inevitable.

Yep, and have you ever looked at renting equipment? It's about 1/3-1/5 the price of the actual cost of the equipment per day. But this is even better, cause they can charge an extra .99 or 3.99 for the larger paint scoop/ladder extension/5'hose/ect.
Amazon is doing the same thing, they want you to "rent" the wrath of khan (for example) for 2.99 or "buy" it for 9.99. Lol, for a movie that would be $5 at walmart and is 30years old.
I estimate this will be the last year I pay large for a PC.
Gonna have to be a 200 dollar machine for that sort of tease........and they are here.
Hate to be the glen bick of pc gaming but..........repent, cause the end is here folks."The bravery of idiots is bravery none the less."

Your close to but not exactly correct. What you will most likely see is games coming in smaller bite sized forms that you pay say 5 dollars for. These small bites will be like episodes I guess and if you want more you pay for the rest of the game out right or you keep paying for more episodes as you beat them. You have already seen this happening with a few games and DLC now being a thing.

Re: WTF is the point...
You guys misunderstand. Most industry speculators agree that the games will stay the same length in terms of hours to complete. Think of it this way for a second. You have always had the choice of how much you complete a game but never a choice with the price. You always had to buy the entire game out right for full price if you wanted to play it. Well what if you had that choice to pay as much as you wanted to for that experience. This model might go two ways(keep in mind this only pertains to singleplayer). The first would be a set price for a certain portion of the game. The second would be a pay as you go model. So say you completed this many levels today. Well the system would detect that and draw a certain fixed rate per level. Games wouldn't cost more in fact the option to pay outright for the entire game would still remain at the normal rates you see today. As for multiplayer well i would assume you would still have to buy the entire package for that but if it is a game you know already like BF you know you will be playing all of it anyways.
Personally I have nothing against this possible new way of business but I would prefer the guys in the industry would start making headway in terms of innovation before they try something like this.Last edited by SourceSkills; 04-24-12 at 12:52 AM.
