Snipers definitely add to a squad's capabilities, but they're only good for defense most of the time.

Re: Sniper?
Snipers have their uses, but they are really only effective in certain situations and in skilled, imaginative hands. I too have defended a silo against an attacking squad all by myself with a rifle and explosives. But I've lost far more. I've successfully assaulted many silos as a sniper, but usually by sneaking in the back and somehow being fortunate enough for the enemy commander not to notice me. Before I found out about UAVs and Sat track, I used to wonder how the hell they always found me. Traditional sniper tactics do not work in BF 2142 because there are so many means of detection, and threats can be instantly relayed to the entire team. I find though, that spotting is still useful, and you can always pick up another kit from a body when it's time for a new role in the battle. In city maps, particularly Camp Gibraltar, Fall of Berlin, Belgrade, and Bridge at Remegan, there are certain re-occuring scenarios which play well into a snipers hands. The cluster of infantry generally hides a snipers position since a sat track will only show a mass of dots. But unless these certain conditions are met, there is not much use in being a sniper even on these maps. I have tried many times to go into a battle and remain only a sniper, and though I often do well, I feel that the only way I've managed to help my team was by saving tickets since no one found me. My best kill count was something like 39, all rifle shots, in a recent Bridge game on TTP. But that's rare. All in all, I'd say snipers have usefulness in specific situations on conquest, and virtually nil usefulness to team play in titans. But they are still my favorite to play and an innovative sniper can wreak havoc and confusion upon the enemy.

Re: Sniper?
Yes, snipers can be useful.
However, the problem lies in the majority of players and their lack of tactical knowledge. One sniper in a squad can be useful on offense or defense. A squad of snipers is a waste of server space.
Look at the ratios in the army. How many grunts are in a squad? How many, if any, snipers?
Here's the problem with this entire argument. We're asking which is better: A squad or a solo sniper? In the Black vs Big debate, no shit Black is going to get owned if he goes solo against an entire squad. But, if Black pops one or two as the squad moves in, then covers the squad with APMs and either takes, or prevents taking, of any high ground, then he has served his purpose as well as any other.
Oh and Big,

Re: Sniper?
It's funny how many people want to play sniper. Since it's my favorite role, I sympathize, but it seems like everyone wants to be Tom Berringer or something. It's unfortunate that this just isn't really a sniping game at all; it's so ridiculously easy to find snipers.
