I'd play every once in a while. Even though BF3 wasn't executed very well, it brings a lot of new elements to the table that add more depth to the game. BF2 was less spammy and didn't pander to the console or CoD crowd but it was also very flat compared to what we play now.
The different tools offered to players like stingers, SOFLAM, mav, customizeable classes, and mortars may not have been implemented perfectly (or at all well in some cases) but their presence adds a lot of depth to the game. I love BF2 but I will probably start to miss that stuff pretty quickly, even though I hate them when they don't work. I will say that BF3 doesn't create the same memories that BF2 did. It's spammier nature lends less freedom to the strategy. All I want for Christmas is BF2.5.
I'd play a bit here and there, but I suspect that the game is more outdated then we realize.
