BRUSSELS, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Belgium's French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

The local authorities plan to monitor compliance with the new tax legislation from helicopters, whose thermal sensors will detect burning grills.

Scientists believe CO2 emissions are a major cause of global warming.

So... let's not go after industry, which is the largest polluter. Let's go after the guy grilling(anyone cooking in their back yard is NOT BBQing. They are grilling. Look it up.) and charge him 20 Euros(27 US Dollars, more or less).

I want to see a chart that tells me that back yard grilling is as polluting as factories, power plants, refineries, etc. Then I'll be okay with this.

And... how much of a carbon footprint are those helicopters going to be producing? More than the grilling?

I saw something about how the EU was tring to force Germany to put speed limits on the autobahn because cars running at higher speeds are less efficient and produce more CO2.

I can commend Europes initiative at trying to limit CO2 but some of the way they are going about it are pretty stupid. I bet all the barbequers in Belgium dont produce as much CO2 in a year as one steal mill produces in a day.

thats the most rediculous thing ive heard all week, especially the part about monitoring it with helicopters, LOL

What they need to do is tax the hell out of the plants that throw million of tons of that shit into the air. Sure the barbeques cause some of it, but nowhere near as much as an industrial complex does. It’s funny how the little people bare the brunt of burdens like this, isn’t it? The cooperation’s pollute on mass scales with relatively light charges compared to their profits, yet the little guy has dish out more then the food is worth, too cook it. How very sad the world is.

The reason is simple:

By working on the SMALLEST issue first, the Global Warming 'industry' alive for decades.

Yeah, that's the first thing that I thought when I read the article.

Now you've got the same amount of grilling as before and all these helicopters flying around burning fuel needlessly.
