BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
Ok so I have played with VOIP on and it drove me nuts. For example it drove me crazy not to be able to talk between rounds, and there have been a lot of people who don't have a solid mix configuration so you can't understand what the fuck they are saying. It's like you're playing in a squad with Chewbacca sometimes.
Also, what happens if the server balances you away from your buddies you want to play with? You instantly have no way to talk except all chat as you try to figure out how to get back on the same team together.
Overwhelmingly though I am noticing that hardly anyone is using VOIP, so that's a bummer too.
I see VOIP becoming better as players get used to it and start using it, and as a good tool to recruit new TPG regulars. But man I keep thinking about third party voice servers being more fun to use for a group of friends than the in-game VOIP. Anyone else feeling that way?
So what will our plan be with regard to voice?

Re: BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
I'm pretty sure that as the beta progresses quality will go up.
And I'm pretty sure once we get our own server, every squad you join will be using voip.
I too noticed really strange bugs and audio issues with voip.
Like people randomly getting kicked into all chat for a conversation. Or even one guy being permanently assigned to all chat while not being able to hear anyone but who he was talking too.
I, for one, am REALLY glad that voip is in game. I don't think, even if we use TS for this, I will use it. Other then the glitches I just pointed out, I have had zero issues with it, when it is used. I was in a squad with Source, Larry, and another guy (Who's name I can't remember but I'm sure has played with TPG before) and we were using voip and it was working perfectly fine for us. No quality issues or anything. And even the random person getting booted to all chat were totally understandable to me.
I really hated having to use a third party program for BF3, because not only did it leave some people out, but most random people who joined the server didn't even bother with it, which meant thaat coordination for an entire squad was nearly always handicapped when not in a full TPG squad. Now with in game voip, everyone in your squad can hear you, and even if they can't talk, you can, which makes coordination so much easier. Recruiting will be easier because those randoms who join will now get the full TPG experience without having to jump through a hoop, which means it'll be easier to hook them on TPG play style, which makes it easier to bring them into the fold.
I noticed that I wasn't using voip all that much, but mostly that's because I was already having my hands full with lag issues, and also because I've had to make due without it for awhile. Those who played in my squad or who were on my team when I was Commander in 2142 should remember that I was very vocal about everything. It's just going to take me some time to get back into the groove of things. And I think this is the issue with hardly anyone using voip. A lot of the most recent BF players (The ones that came in during BC2 and BF3) have grown up without it. They're not used to it, and I'm pretty sure they're not entirely sure what to make of it. But once everyone gets used to having it in the game, I'm pretty sure it's usage will go up.

Re: BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
From my understanding it will be just like it was in BF2, use the in game VOIP. That is what may really set us apart from the rest. I have seen a lack of VOIP use in the beta from non-TPG members. Those that do use will find their home here. Those that don't will learn that it's a valuable tool or get mowed down by the enemy team.
I personally would view 3rd party voice chat as ghosting but I will let a High make the call on that for TPG.“Honor has not to be won; it must only not be lost.” - Schopenhauer

Re: BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
We will be using VOIP. Without a doubt. Likely, we will kill the TS channel on the public server as there is no need.
Wait until you play on our server. You weren't around here for BF2/2142, and I can tell you we do it different than most, and better than all. Much of TPG is what it is because the BF2 and 2142 servers were so popular. VOIP played a crucial role, and many of us ended up joining the forums because of it.
Other servers are there for us to try and test the game out, as well as get our settings figured out. Many of us are having fun, but mostly killing time until the retail release when we can fire up the TPG server(s). Then the fun begins. Full squads, orders being followed, commanders on both teams, and asshat free bliss. Battlefield TPG style is back. Trust me......VOIP will be used....heavily.
I can't wait.......it's gonna rule.

Re: BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
You couldn't talk in between rounds in BF2, either. And it's not the client that garbles the voice, its going through the cloud set up that SONAR has set up. I don't know, but it works for me like 90-95% of the time, crystal clear.
Same thing happened with BF2. And so what? It's an opportunity to play with some other people, use your mic and get them to push the objective. Allane, Loki and I were on a server with a pubber as a SL, and even though he didn't have voice, he was putting down objective markers, typing to us in chat, etc. Nothing about what you are saying is any different from BF2.
I must disagree with you. Using is in game VOIP is far more fun because we can recruit, just like we did in BF2, and play with folks who have a mic but may not join a 3rd party voice server.
The official stance is, we will be using the in game VOIP as our standard. No public channel will be created, like in BF3/BC2. This is as close to BF2 style as we have been in the last 4+ years. We aren't going to waste it.Gunny liked this post

Re: BF4 VOIP - Bridging the gap
I can say only this.
If VOIP is working in game as it is supposed to (and it appears that it is), TPG will not be running TS for BF4 players. AND, we will likely enforce a "no third party voip" just like we did in BF2, and like we do in Arma3 currently. If people seem to think this is a huge issue, we (the highs) will likely discuss it, but one of the biggest *problems* with BF3 is the TS3 voip. It creates a rift of have and have-nots that is almost impossible to overcome. There is no way *I* will ever support it for BF4 if in-game voip is working correctly.hannibal liked this post
