As an IT professional, I don't agree with this statement..

"I've spoken to many IT professionals over the years and none of them see why any anti-cheat device would have to persistently run in the background as a start-up program and scan local files let alone run at any time other than when a game is actually launched and being played."

I can see exactly why anti-cheat companies would do this. This is the same exact technology used in anti-virus software and the only way to verify signatures is to have it run all the time. It's been like this for quite some time now..

And like one of the commenters pointed out... you can always stop the Punkbuster processes when you're not gaming...

    It's not hard to do.

What I am concerned about would be false positives. Are those still common?

The last false positive I can recall was the one that caught Jimbo... and that was ages ago.

    Re: really?

Disable it when you aren't running a game, problem solved as far as I'm concerned. Is the author brand new? PB has been around for years now, and was a part of BF2/2142. They must be playing a long con if nobody can report any issues with the software and privacy violations over its lifetime.

    Re: really?

I dont' remember if PB was running 24/7 on my bf2 installations or not. I know I'm not real happy with the TOS that states that my privacy isn't as important as the ability to catch cheaters, and that they can send screenshots of my machine at any time. That is bothersome.
