*sniff* I miss those days...
Life was simple. Everyone had access to all classes and weapons. No weapon mods, no stupid skins, no dumb killstreak perks, no crazy leveling to unlock vehicle weapons... Playing lots of Unreal Tournament 4 recently has seriously been like a palette-cleansing appetizer for PC FPS gaming for me. It's modern, it's flashy, it's got stats and what-not, but the game is fundamentally the same, everyone is on equal playing field, and doing well takes skill, not perks or unlocks. Hopefully new titles will tone it back a notch and we'll see some game franchises getting back to their roots - crossing my fingers that DooM won't disappoint
EDIT: Regarding BF5, personally I'd be super happy if it was WWI or WW2...or 2143 or basically anything other than another bland modern warfare shooter. If they did something cool and new with it, maybe I would even be okay with modern so long as it was different. Hardline at least attempted to do something different, even though it kinda fell flat on its faceLast edited by salty99; 04-14-16 at 11:02 PM.

Re: Rumors of BF5 being set in WWI
You guys have to look at this from a money making perspective. Unlocks, gadgets, and upgrades give DICE an income stream long after the initial purchase of the game. I don't see a WWI, WWII, or even a Vietnam era game having loads of tech-ups. It would be a race to get to the Thompson since most people can't hit squat with single shot, much less a bolt action rifle (or maybe that's just me). I just don't seem them making another DoD.
If DICE really wanted to get creative, they'd take the game off planet. Why not have titan to titan combat... in space. Why not make the levels several large facilities orbiting a planet which must be taken by "space marines" jumping from one ship to the other? Introduce fighters in a dog-fighting scenario as waves of infantry disable and destroy each other's ships from the inside AND out? Infinitely upgrade-able, and a truly unique series of gameplay options.
I know, I know, I'm basically describing what CCP should do with EVE, but I don't see them ever pulling their heads out of their butts to do it, so why not DICE? They've already hinted at a 2142 version of the game with "Giants of Karelia". Go space.

Re: Rumors of BF5 being set in WWI
That's not DICE's money making scheme that's EA's. There are many other ways of making money off of their products that are more morally acceptable and that has been proven time and again by even the smallest of development teams. So what if we don't get a sandstorm in the middle of the map, so what if we don't get a gigantic skyscraper collapsing I mean is that really going to make or break the next game for you. Why did we need that stuff. All we asked for was a good shooter worth our time and money. A thousand weapons with hundreds of attachments while sounds awesome isn't awesome and we don't need it. It makes the game inherently imbalanced because how are you supposed to keep balance when you have to contend with so much variety. What made WW1 and WW2 games so much fun wasn't the variety of weapons or attachments it was the feeling you got when you won. Your teamwork your skill bested the enemy team not some cheap tactics or weapons we see all the time in BF4 or BF3. That's what makes BF4 so hollow of an experience and thats what makes people not want to play anymore. And before you say it is impossible to make the type of game we want without all that fluff I remind you that even in this day and age it has been done and very well with insurgency, squad, and arma.
Sorry went into a rant there but I read that money standpoint thing and I couldn't resist.

Re: Rumors of BF5 being set in WWI
It's all good. I hear ya. And in a perfect world, all games would be based on the thrill for the player, and the accomplishment of a job well done. But sadly, we live in a world where when EA says "jump", Dice says, "how high". Money drives game design, not fun; which is the biggest issue I have with games today. You'd be hard pressed to find a complete game on launch day that didn't promise a bunch of DLC's waiting to be sold. EA has perfected this "pay to play" mode and as long as people line up to buy and play the game, they'll keep pumping it out.
What does a WWI or WWII game really offer? More maps? I'm just imagining the EA accountants pouring over their excel spread sheets and shaking their head "hell no" when a DICE designer pitches their epic WWI shooter. I could be wrong. Personally, I think it could be interesting. But realistically... I don't see that happening.

WW1, WW2, 'Nam, The Sandbox Wars, or The Falklands....It doesn't matter. Whatever the backdrop, BF5 better have a KICKASS version of Kubra Dam, or I'll write a very sternly-worded letter (after I purchase the game, of course).
