I bought a joystick yesterday. I've never ever used other than my mouse and keyboard in Battlefield. Yet I can still keep up.
Though I don't fly very much. But it's very cool to use a joystick.
I recommend you buying one. 'Cause when you get used to it, it will be better than a mouse and a keyboard.

Joystick. I never fly without one.
Here's a good joystick for low cost: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826102204

I have no idea Sgt. Hall. I didn't even know joystick was an option with the aircraft.
Personally, I just don't drive those things. Even though you don't gethit with real teamkill penalties, I think its probably still bad karma killing my team mates when I try to land.

Re: Fly away
for those of you that use a joystick to fly do you also use it for land vehicles or do you stick with the keyboard & mouse? I have a joystick and I tried it once back when I was playing battlefield Vietnam but I sucked with it. Maybe it is time to break out the joystick again and try flying the BF2142 vehicles becuase I suck with the mouse and keyboard.

Re: Fly away
For this game I use a mouse and keyboard. The only thing a joystick will do for you is aid in doing verticle rolls a bit easier. But what you just need to do is read the info stickies above this post by blackhawk that that will help a lot. Also by holding the a & s keys and panning to the left will allow you to do a sweeping motion and s & d will do the same for the right. This really aids in chasing tanks and infantry. You can use this also to sweep over and around hills once you have practiced enough.
My vote would be for mouse and keyboard... on BF2 I would use a joystick since the controls are a bit touchy.
