10-02-07, 10:29 PM #1BF2 on Vista
I'm building a new computer soon, and will be back on the bf2 server. I don't really wan't Vista, but I'm gonna have to upgrade eventually so it seems logical to save 100 bucks and get it now, but I've heard that BF2 may have problems running on Vista, does anyone know whether this is true or not?
Thanks

Re: BF2 on Vista
I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have 4 gigs of RAM.
There is a well documented problem with BF2/2142 on systems using 64 bit OS and greater than 2 gigs of RAM. Basically when flushing/loading maps the program asks for a big 'ol hunk of memory but was never designed for systems with greater than 2Gb of RAM; the program because of this looks for a NEGATIVE memory address which of course does not exist and it crashes.
There is a fix: I am using hacked executables that address the issue. The only problem is once and awhile PB realizes my client is modified and I get kicked. It happens once about every 6 hours of play time; shows how effective PB is huh?
there are other fixes too but this one worked and I didnt mess with the others...
Also, the Vista 64bit Creative drivers have created problems for me and several people I know using vista 64. Conversely, I have several friends running X-Fi Fatl1ty cards (like mine) on Vista 64 with 2Gb of RAM and they have NO problems.
But really, Vista 64 or 32 on a system with 2Gb or less should work just fine. If you have a fancy X-Fi (like mine) you MAY have issues but it's not guaranteed. Aside from the map flushing/loading issue I have zero problems and am loving my Vista 64 and I see no reason to not use it.

Re: BF2 on Vista
SoySoldier check the Creative website and get the driver they released yesterday for the X-Fi.
I had mic issues (randomly starts producing loud screeching/static/humming) as well as some hissing and popping. The new driver cleared all of those issues for me.
Like you I have 64-bit Vista and 4GB RAM too, so hopefully that will help.

Re: BF2 on Vista
I have Vista 32 bit, and I curse the day...
I crash to desktop and have a memory error I am never allowed to read the dialog box for several times each playing session. Usually (maybe always) between rounds or when loading a new map.
I have 2 Gig memory.
Anyone have suggestions (other than going back to XP)?For when the One Great Scorer comes, to write against your name, he writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the Game
