NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR? NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

Re: NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

    I dunno about all that...

It's sounds nice, and I guess you could make a strong argument, but the fact is, they are different games. It's like saying that lasagna is better than pizza, they're both Italian for sure, but it's really about preference as to which one you like better. No one has the definitive answer as to which is better, it's about personal taste... just like PR vs. BF2.

I certainly wouldn't say that BF2 is the kiddie version and PR is the grownups version. The fact that they have the same name is about all that's the same with the two games. They're just different.

Teamwork is still needed in BF2, planning is still needed in BF2, and an understanding of the overall game dynamic is needed; like what to do when and where.

I would say that PR is about strategy. Meaning, it's about a team's complete strategic effort to pull off a win. It's take much more careful planning, and execution to pull off the win. Some people love that, I do too when I'm in the mood for it.

That's vastly different than BF2, where tactics win the war. Tactics in individual situations are what wins in BF2. For example, how well do players play the game? How much do pilots effect the overall landscape of the game? BF2 has much more arcade like overtones which means that hand-eye coordination is paramount and an individuals ability to implement that tactically, not superior strategy.

On the opposite spectrum, CSS and DoD players put the average BF2er to shame as far as reflexes go. So I think that PR caters to a different kind of player; one that may be more cerebral. But overall, the games are so far removed from one another that saying they are the same, or that one is a more advanced version of the other is, well... dumb.

Uh... I played a six hour map... once. I think we've had this conversation before.

They don't all take six hours, and, had the vast majority of the opposing team known what to do, it probably would have taken less than six hours.

But I can assure you, six hours was not an exaggeration by any means.

My main problem with PR is, it is EXTREMELY slow. You walk across them map which takes forever, you cap a flag which takes forever, you die and it takes forever to respawn. The average player hates that.

The mentality is I'm trying to enjoy myself playing said game and your going to make me wait forever to get that enjoyment? Thats why I don't play it much....

    My 2 cents.

I guess i'm a fool. I'm sure there are some that didn't think they'd like PR, they thought PR was too complicated. They thought that regular BF2 tactics would win a round. Fact is, they don't. You are right in the fact that it is more strategic. You are wrong about the time it takes to play a map. You are also wrong about the walking. It takes a guy thinking about his team to wait for them to load up in an APC or Hummer. It takes a SL knowing how and when to set a Rally Point. You are right that they are very different games mentally and strategically.

I was right when i said

Give us a shot to do it and see if you like it.
You will note and concede the fact that i already called it like it was going to be. You will also note that i offered an alternative. I knew it wasn't going to fly with the way it was presented. It's not your fault that you don't like change much. It's a part of life. Some are more flexible than others.

@ Keld: unless you understood where i was coming from and going to with my explanation of tactics. I can see why you'd think i was a fool. To those who know me better; there is no way possible that i'm saying BF2 has no tactics. They are completely and wholly different.

I'd also rather not have any controversy or misunderstandings between any of us. There isn't much sense in it. So i'm offering my apologies for even thinking to ask you guys if you'd be interested if we did our own PR match like i stated. Stay in Vanilla and us PR junkies will do it ourselves.

Why don't you guys try a start map, like "Street" or "Helmand Province" ?

Street only has 3 control points to capture and Helmand Province has 4 and Hills of Hamyong has 5....

It is not possible to go 6 hours on the same map.....

You guys give it a try.

PR client version 0613 and it runs smoother than BF2, without any lag what so ever.
Also, not near as big a strain on your system.

Re: NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

I LOVE PR for all the reasons that you guys are describing. I love that game!

I just don't think it'll work as well for the monthly matches. You guys are right in every point you're making, without question. I just don't see the average BF2er signing up for a match if it's PR.

Perhaps as we grow the PR server more, we could do that. But even then, I'd like to see a Vanilla and PR match monthly. That would be a refreshing change of pace.

But PR taking the place of Vanilla for the monthly matches would be a mistake. Have 'em both. Just don't replace one with the other.

The BF2 Match should not be played in PR for the same reason that CS:S matches don't get played in DoD. They are different games.

If the PR enthusiasts want to have a match then they can do that. Someone would have to step up to the task of allocating a server and setting it up. We tried doing it before on short notice and it was a disaster by any common definition of quality. First off, the server password did not work so strangers joined the match and messed it up. Second, reservists that lost connection during the match were unable to rejoin because the server was full and the reserve list was not set up. Bottom line, the last PR match turned into a regular PR game. Was it fun for some? Yes. But it was not a match by any measure. All the plans, prepared teams, etc. went out window when the server booted.

I'm not knocking the people that set up the PR match server. I'm just saying it wasn't ready when the curtains went up and that can't happen again.

Re: NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

I agree. But to play the part of the devils advocate, the BF2 server setup has been pretty shotty as well.

We just need to put more effort into making it a grand affair.

Maybe we do like College and the NFL do; we have PR match on Saturday, and BF2 match on Sunday of the same weekend?

Re: NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

Maybe we just put together a PR match that does not conflict with the monthly matches that are already in place. We make a big effort to recruit as many people as possible and then see what people think about the game set up in a match scenario. If there becomes a major interest then we know we have something that could be in the rotation. If not then we move on.

I do agree that PR is not for everyone and is a totally different game than vanilla but I disagree that it is as bad as it has been made out in some of the posts here.

Re: NOVEMBER MONTHLY MATCH BF2 or PR?

I've already been recruiting people to the website in the hopes of a PR match sometime soon. I never once mentioned replacing the BF2 Monthly matches. I just think it would be a nice change of pace to switch it up once in a while. In an ideal world, we'd have both matches co-ordinated and running smoothly. I see no need to debate the inevitable though. Most debates of this nature end in a debacle with hurt feelings because of pride or misunderstandings. None of which will help anyone here.
