Kate, dont worry about it. I married a gamer girl and it was the best thing I could have ever done. This poor, ignorant guy obviously cant see the benefit to being nice to gamer girls and will probably settle down with some girl who will nag him and call him immature for playing video games (or he will die alone while masturbating).

It's just something girl gamers have to deal with. If you have two X chromosomes & want to play video games, you're going to have to be able to deal with the dumbass comments that come along with it.
I've become used to it now & it's not that big of a deal to me. But that might be because I refer to myself as a gamer who just happens to have different parts. In the words of WelshKorgii "I do not embrace my vagina while I play". A gamer is a gamer.
However, I did get a shirt that says "I don't need to validate my existence as a girl gamer to you. I'M JUST GOING TO PWN YOU". ;] I couldn't resist.

I think it's strange that females refer to themselves as girl gamers, as if playing video games has ever been constrained to one gender. This isn't like the NBA, where men and women must be segregated because of physical differences. I started playing Atari with my mother(a girl). Men were typically too busy working or playing games that involved skill and athletics. This separation was probably invented by children who play games and feel the need for individualism as they grow older. Discrimination is uncool, whether it's for race, gender, or choice of entertainment. Sound minded adults hate everyone equally.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I've played live quite a bit, but I hardly ever see any girls online.
I got into a wrong L4D match and as soon as I left, someone sent me a message (who I presumed was a guy with a joke girl avatar) quite crudely about whether i was a girl (to which I masterfully told him to get a life) but when I later got a messsage from the same person asking what the nelly, i realised that the person was REALLY a woman...

to paraphrase a line from a certain greek tragedy, AAAAARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!! (bites fist)

of course that might be stupid old deary dosy me.
