just got the latest drivers for my video card just in case, still have the same issue (although I only tested in Portal, it actually did the freeze even sooner than it usually does)

those drivers didn't help. It still locks up after about the same amount of time.

These were all within 30 seconds of one another, at the time of crash, all taken from dxdiag/event viewer of course

Also I have seen people with similar issues having it fixed by rolling back to previous nvidia drivers, but I'm running an ATI card. This wouldn't work for me, I'm assuming (I might not be completely computer savvy, but this seems like it wouldn't work at all haha)

Also also a friend just recommended based on your recommendation to disable my sound drivers completely in device manager, even after doing that, I still have the crash. So I'm fairly confident it is not my sound device or drivers.

This is starting to kill me :<

Ok so I just saw this in the sticky
Check to make sure you only have one sound device installed
start > run > dxdiag > If you have more then 1 Sound tab, uninstall the one that isn't your sound card.
I did notice there were two sound tabs, and even though disabling both of my sound devices in device manager didn't fix the issue, I thought this might still have something to do with it. I went into device manager to uninstall the device that had no effect on my sound (disabling it still allowed me to have normal sound through my speakers), and it still locked up. However, upon starting up my PC again, it automatically reinstalled that useless second device, and I cannot stop it from doing this. Both are under the

    Sound, Video and game controllers

tab, and both are labeled as "High Definition Audio Device". Disabling one does nothing, while disabling the other causes all sound to stop. Uninstalling the one that does nothing reinstalls itself upon restarting the computer, so even if this were to somehow fix it if I could get it to uninstall, there doesn't seem to be a way.

    Any help?

You may be able to disable the sound device in your BIOS. Start your computer and hold down the Delete key or whatever key it says will take you into your setup/BIOS screen. Look for an option that lets you disable that sound device.

I did this on mine since I have on board sound, but I added a Soundblaster Awe PCI card, so I disabled the on board sound device in my BIOS.

Maybe I'm just overlooking something, but I don't see anything in my BIOS that screams on board sound to me. Again, I'm not too savvy with this kind of thing, so I'm more than likely just severely overlooking it. Are there certain menus/items I should be looking for to disable? I would assume it would say something related to sound, but I didn't see anything.

Another person recommended going into the launch settings and setting it back to directx 9 and 8.1 as well, but neither of those worked either. Also reinstalled the newest audio drivers since I realized the ones I originally had weren't the newest, but no dice there either.

I still have not found the device in my bios, I'll look for that after work today.
