    Question on TTP "norms"

Howdy. Lurker here with a question on TTP "Norms" as it were...

For me, the most important stat has generally been winning, along with having fun, which doesn't show up on EA's server. So, this has been one of the places I've been stopping by, and generally having a pretty good time. (Except for laggyNGroovy- I think he has a deep-seated personal grudge against me, based on how often he kills me. :P ) Anyway, I consider myself a decent team player, but I know I'm also anti-social sometimes if I've had a bad day & might just answer in text rather than on mic. I'm also willing to be a hero on occasion if the job looks like it needs doing. So, I'll often spawn at a back base to get vacant armor & bring it forward (unused armor makes my head hurt) or go steal an enemy's walker, etc. Of course, if there's an empty flag between me and my squad, I'll generally go cap it (assuming I can get a UAV or have a sensor to confirm that my odds look O.K.)

So, are people going to get grumpy at me for bringing along a tank, or capping a flag along the way? I had an admin "scold" me the other day because I spawned on the titan when I saw it was empty and the shields had just dropped. So I camped a hallway for a little while until a squad showed up to defend the other corridor. At that point I went and gave them my sentry gun and an ammo box, and then headed back out of the corridor to join my squad. On the way out an admin texted me to get off the titan and get to my squad, which is what I was doing... Sorta surprised me a little give that I was just trying to help out a bit.

So, am I considered out of line when I do that kind of stuff? Am I expected to spawn on the squad leader every time, or is it O.K. to do other things that support that mission (like steal an enemy vehicle.)

Also, if you're in a flying mood, what's the general norm? Make a squad and call it "airship?" I don't usually do that because it sounds like you're trying to hog the thing. (Which I'm not- If I spawn and other folks have them, or are waiting in line, I'll go do something useful.) Stay as a loner? I don't usually do that since I'd like to hear what the commander is saying, and no one can spawn in to gun with me.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

    Lurker,

I don't think the things you are mentioning are out of line, having said that I would set forth a few ground rules when doing them.

    1. If you are going to do something other than the squad leader or commanders objective you must voice it on the mic and tell them why.

If another squad was told to defend titan and they aren't in place yet tell someone that you will be holding the area until they arrive.

    2. If you are going to cap a flag or silo on the way to an objective let the squad leader/commander know and they usually won't have an issue with it. If they do they will tell you why and it is probably a good reason for you to get to the objective without delays.

    3. I also get anti-social at times (when I'm out of beer) and in those times I would not recommend using text I would just get the bare essentials out over the mic. You don't have to chat with everyone but you do have to tell them when things are going down that have tactical importance.

    4. You can always use the page up/page down keys (or whatever you have them bound to) to say yes sir or negative. I use them quite alot and it saves some of the mic chatter that goes on when others might need to get important info to the squad leader/members.

Hope this helps! See ya around.

Yeah, communication is the thing. It sounds like you are doing the right stuff and making decisions based on the interest of the team, but it is hard to tell unless your squad leader knows what you are doing. They could understandbly mistake it for you doing your own thing. If your not going to use your mic, I think you should stay with your squad always otherwise you will probably have problems in the future.

As they've said, most squad leaders are fine with this sort of thing, provided that you ok it with them first. This way, you can make sure that there isn't some reason that the SL needs everyone to spawn on them right then. It also depends on the squad leader themselves, and also what's going on at the moment. Maybe the squad leader's just heard from the commander that there's a shit-ton of people moving in on the silo, and he or she needs everyone there to hold the line, or maybe not a lot's going on and you can go grab a tank from an adjacent silo. I tend to be slightly more lax about the entire squad moving in a single group early on in Titan maps, but I also expect squad members to get to wherever they need to go if necessary.

You were either flying a gunship or just unlucky. I generally kill people who have red names and end up in my cross hairs. Sometimes, that means I kill the same person repeatedly. Don't take it personally if it happens to you, unless you know, you humped a corpse or showed some serious disrespect. Then, your ass is mine if I see it happen. :2 :4
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

    Re: Question on TTP "norms"

First of all welcome to the forums! Don't think I have seen you around the game a lot but I think you were the one that threw me the ammo box, and I did not yell at you as an admin...I typed out in team chat your name and said to leave the titan that squad _ had it. I do that for everyone on the titan. I was on the titan when the shields went down, already had apm and rdx out waiting for the rest of my squad running down the halls. I typed it out so that you knew someone had defense.

You were not being yelled at, you were being informed that someone else had defense. You have to realize that if you are not with your squad, people are going to think you are not following orders and that does happen a lot on titan defense. A lot of time it is people who are not even squaded, I didn't look to see if you were in a squad and ask why you were not follow orders, I simply typed out that we had this and we needed silos more than another body.

I am sick of all the people on titan defense who don't need to be there, they usually just get team killed and then punish for it.

I haven't seen you around the server much so I don't know your style...don't take offense to people looking out for the good of the server. I can say I will do the same thing when the shields go now if ther eis no one else there. I will say to my SL that I am on titan and as soon as defense shows up I am out. As soon as a SL shows up, I walk away, grab a transport and move onto the assigned task.

    Re: Question on TTP "norms"

Fair enough- I appreciate the replies. Nothing unreasonable there. I actually had let my squad leader know what I was up to, but don't worry- I didn't take it as "yelling" That's why I said "scolded" Kinda like when my wife gets that look on her face, "Now honey... Should you *really* be defending the titan right now, or do you have somewhere else you should be..."

Is there a TS channel we pubbers can use to improve comms, or just the VOIP?

Right now our TS is private as we were having issues with it before and not everyone who was on the server(s) used it, it was actually only a real few people who did use it. I'd assume for the 2142 and BF2 it was more so to do with it's hard enough to hear someone when you are a SL and you have the commander, your squad, and people in TS talking to you all at once.

    Btw, welcome to TTP.
