Well, not your wildest dreams, I've tried my hand commanding today 3 times (one my computer crashed when we were going to win, the other the server crashed, the last one we plain and simple lost), and it's not entirely as tough as it seems. Just put down UAV's where most of your forces are fighting hostiles, Keep Sat-track going and keep your SL's informed where most of their forces are, along with stragglers. Use Orbital Strikes where the enemy is concentrated in order to break them up, EMP-Orbital walkers when they're harassing your soldiers, EMP when you can't Orbital. I keep on getting knifed though, I don't know where the good hiding spots are.

But Allane, after your stint commanding, I bet you are MUCh more appreciative of what the commander is doing and how herding the cowboy squad leaders is analagous to herding cats. But when all the squad leaders are doing as directed.... yeah... THAT is kinda groooooovy
Another tip for those coming in to commanding, when you're under the hood and commanding your brains out, sometimes you want to talk to a squad invidually, whatever squad you have selected in the upper left can hear you with the V key. Such as when you want to send ONE squad to rape the enemy base. I don't like to send that where they can all hear because all of a sudden, I've got 4 squads in the enemy base as they start retaking everything that is now undefended.
Personally, I prefer to jump on a squad leaders case where all the squad leaders can hear it, but to cut down on distractions, I try to direct individual communications to the squad leaders as appropriate.
