    AK-47

AK-47 - The Left 4 Dead Wiki - Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors, Infected, walkthroughs, news, and more

The AK-47 is an Assault Rifle variant that made its debut in Left 4 Dead 2. It trades the versatility of the Assault Rifle for incredible stopping power, making it an excellent weapon for handling hordes of Common Infected and Tanks. However, it also has a slower fire rate, a smaller magazine, and poor accuracy.

    edit Official Description

What this Soviet-made assault rifle lacks in accuracy, it makes up for in firepower. You can squeeze off these higher caliber rounds in single shots for ammo conservation, or room-clear with fully automatic fire.[1]
    edit Tactics

    * The AK-47 can kill Common Infected with one or two shots based on difficulty, making it an incredibly useful weapon for taking down hordes.
    * The slower firing rate on the AK-47 means that you can save ammunition when picking off lone Common Infected.
    * The AK-47's high damage makes it an excellent Tank busting weapon. It can't quite match the auto shotguns in damage per second, but the weapon's range makes it the better weapon for killing Tanks in open spaces.
    * While the AK-47 has poor accuracy when moving and high recoil, you can still pull off somewhat accurate bursts to kill distant Infected with. Crouching before firing will greatly increase accuracy in shooting Infected at a distance.
    * Shooting a Witch in the head with the AK-47 will stun her as if you headshot her with a Sniper Rifle. This isn't recommended, however, unless your team has enough firepower to kill her before she can reach you.
    * The Laser Sight upgrade works best with the AK-47, patching up the weapon's main drawback and making it a much more effective weapon for distance shots.
o With a Laser Sight, crouching does not improve accuracy over a standing position unless shooting while moving.
    * Explosive and Incendiary ammo upgrades don't complement the AK-47 as well as they do the Assault Rifle, although they still work well with it given the easily controllable rate of fire.
    * The Magnum is a good secondary to use with the AK-47, as it gives you a longer-distance weapon while you save your AK-47 for close range. The Pistols, however, aren't as effective, though still moreso than the AKM.
    * Melee weapons work well with the AK-47 due to the weapon's versatility, but leave you vulnerable at long range.
    * A useful method for the AK-47 is to repeatedly tap the primary fire button (but not fast enough for full-auto) while crouching. This fires single bullets which are fairly accurate, and given the time between shots, the AK-47 can be made into a decent ranged weapon without the use of a Laser Sight. The power of the bullets mean it would only take 3-4 shots to down a Smoker or Hunter in the distance, and this method can also conserve ammo.

    edit Pros and Cons
    [edit] Pros

    * Excellent close range weapon that can easily kill any Common Infected as well as Special Infected.
    * Highest damage per second of the assault rifles.
    * Able to fire single shots easily when required, greatly conserving ammo.
    * Attaching a Laser Sight will make the AK-47 one of the best assault rifles in the game, as it will make the AK-47 accurate while preserving the pure damage the gun can inflict.
    * Works very well at taking out a Tank in wide open spaces which the shotguns have more difficulty doing.
    * Works well with a Magnum because it can help shoot targets that are far away.
    * Works well if another Survivor is holding an Auto Shotgun, especially from a random Horde or a Tank on Advanced or Expert, though this puts you at a disadvantage at range.

    [edit] Cons

    * If you do not use controlled burst fire, you may find yourself running low on ammo quite often.
    * Does not work as well with Explosive ammo and Incendiary ammo, as the shotguns or the M-16 Assault Rifle does.
    * Not recommended to use against a Witch because it cannot cr0wn her and it is close ranged, meaning it is too dangerous to fire just with the AK-47.
    * It has a quite slow rate of fire and high recoil (crouching helps with this, but it's still a problem).
    * Has the largest bullet spread of any weapon except the shotguns and the M60.
    * When ensnared by a Smoker, it is difficult to kill him before being dragged away.
    * Is inaccurate at medium to long range, even when using burst shots without a laser sight.

Combat Rifle - The Left 4 Dead Wiki - Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors, Infected, walkthroughs, news, and more

The Combat Rifle (also referred to as the Desert Rifle) is a Tier 2 Assault Rifle variant that has a capacity of 60 rounds per magazine. Unlike the other assault rifles, it fires a three-round burst. Holding down the trigger button will continually fire three-round bursts, unlike burst rifles in most games, where the trigger must be pulled every time a burst is fired. Sustained bursts make for a more accurate spread of fire than the Assault Rifle.

    edit Tactics

    * The Combat Rifle is a little more accurate than the Assault Rifle, and fires set three-round bursts. It works very well for picking off Special Infected at a distance.
    * The Combat Rifle's ability to continually fire bursts as long as the trigger is held down makes it an effective weapon for taking down Hordes, but melee weapons are recommended, as ammo can quickly become scarce this way.
    * A total of 420 ammo translates to 140 shots, so be sure to watch your ammunition count and use your secondary weapon when appropriate.
    * The reload speed on the Combat Rifle is slower than the other assault rifles, so be sure to reload only when you find a suitable interlude.
    * Very effective on the run due to high accuracy when moving.
    * The Combat Rifle is incredibly useful for taking down groups of Infected. A single shot will result in three bullets, so make sure you add a bit of spread to your shooting.
    * The Combat Rifle has the highest ammo capacity compared to the other assault rifles, allowing you to shoot for a while before having to reload. Because of the high ammo capacity, you will get a lot of ammo to use for Explosive Ammunition and Incendiary Ammunition.

    edit Pros and Cons
    [edit] Pros

    * Best accuracy out of all assault rifle weapons, particularly on the run and when being attacked.
    * 3 round burst helps experienced players conserve ammo and regain accuracy (The crosshair will tighten back between bursts.).
    * Higher DPS than the Assault Rifle.
    * Good at taking down Hordes when continually firing.
    * Fairly high accuracy when running.
    * Works well with a Laser Sight.
    * Quite powerful at taking down Special Infected and very effective when it comes to dealing with the Tank.
    * Works well with Explosive Ammunition and Incendiary Ammunition.
    * Can help save team-mates with ease.

    [edit] Cons

    * Longest reloading time for an assault rifle-type weapon.
    * If you continually fire, you will find yourself running low on ammo quite often.
    * When surrounded, the burst shot makes it more difficult to clear away enemies as opposed to the full automatic rifles.
    * Can deplete ammo faster than the AK-47. While the AK-47 can be used to pick off Infected at a distance with one shot (and careful timing of the fire button), the Combat Rifle will always fire three shots, regardless of how quickly the button is pressed. This can be bypassed with a carefully timed melee shove during a burst, which will stop said burst in-between shots. It is advised to switch to the secondary weapon for removing single Common Infected.

    edit Differences

The Combat Rifle fires in three-round bursts as opposed to full-automatic, which translates the 60-round magazine to 20 shots. The individual bursts are highly accurate, and the weapon is still greatly accurate when running or being hit by Infected. DPS is higher than the Assault Rifle, but lower than the AK-47, and the reload time is the longest of the assault rifles; it takes a little over three seconds to reload.

Assault Rifle - The Left 4 Dead Wiki - Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors, Infected, walkthroughs, news, and more

The Assault Rifle (M-16 Assault Rifle in Left 4 Dead 2) is a Tier 2 replacement for the Submachine Gun and Silenced Submachine Gun, with higher damage and better accuracy. It holds 50 rounds with a 360 round reserve, having less total ammo than the two submachine guns, but being a better overall weapon. The Assault Rifle is the best choice as a general use firearm, being adaptable to virtually every situation.

The Assault Rifle is a weapon that is mostly effective in medium-range combat, as opposed to the short-range Auto Shotgun and the long-range Hunting Rifle. It is a very flexible weapon, however, adept at picking off Special Infected from a distance and piercing multiple Common Infected. It has a relatively high piercing power, but not quite as high as the Hunting Rifle. Its high piercing power makes it a useful weapon for clearing rooms full of Infected or destroying oncoming Hordes. The Assault Rifle is also a very potent anti-Tank weapon, due to the Auto Shotgun's damage penalty against them and it's ability to deal full damage to the Tank before he even gets close.

Assault Rifle ammo is easy to waste. The weapon trades ammo capacity for accuracy and damage, and this must be used to full advantage to be effective. The Assault Rifle generally needs only two or three shots to do its job, and any more hampers its accuracy at mid to long range. Thus, burst firing or "headhunting" is highly recommended at medium to long ranges, since all Infected run at the same height (except the Mudmen). It is possible to fire single rounds with the Assault Rifle, although the fire button must be very quickly pressed. This can be useful when shooting long-range, and is effective on most difficulty settings except for Expert.

The Assault Rifle's tighter cone of fire makes it safer than the Auto Shotgun when firing near other Survivors, but on higher difficulties it struggles to keep up with the increased health of the Common Infected, requiring three hits to kill one on Expert, whereas the other Tier 2 weapons only need one (provided the Auto Shotgun user is close enough).

In a group of four on finales, it's a good idea to have two people with Auto Shotguns and two people with Assault Rifles. Get in a closet or similar point which causes the Infected to file in slowly. The two people with the Auto Shotguns crouch and shoot or use melee, while the two people with the Assault Rifles stand behind them and fire at the Infected as they approach. This is obviously ineffective against the Tank. It is also ineffective in Left 4 Dead 2, as the Director will spawn a Spitter to prevent Survivors from staying in one place for too long.
    edit Pros

    * Higher rate of fire than its counterparts.
    * Is highly versatile, being able to be used in almost any role.
    * Laser sight effectively cancels out accuracy problems.
    * A skilled user can easily conserve ammunition.
    * Magazine holds 50 rounds, with a total ammunition count of 410 rounds.
    * Has the fastest reload time out of the three assault rifle variants.

    edit Cons

    * Has the lowest damage per shot and damage per second of all the assault rifles.
    * Somewhat inaccurate without a laser sight when moving.
    * If firing non-stop and reloading, will burn though ammo the quickest out of all the assault rifles.

    Darkman 4Added by Darkman 4

The Assault Rifle returns in Left 4 Dead 2, but has some new animations along with a new name: the "M-16 Assault Rifle". The most notable change is its accuracy downgrade, with approximately 60% accuracy of the old Assault Rifle. Compared to the other two rifles (the AK-47 and the Combat Rifle), it is the "middle of the road" assault rifle variant in terms of capacity along with balancing stopping power and damage with accuracy and range, making it good for almost any situation.
    edit Behind the Scenes
Early screenshot showing the Assault Rifle without text on its left side.
    Darkman 4Added by Darkman 4

Early screenshots show that the Assault Rifle lacked text on its left side at one time.

When the Assault Rifle was drawn in early versions of the game, the character would pull the charging handle as soon as he/she took the gun out. The sound for this animation is still played when the Assault Rifle is drawn out in the final version of the game.

The Assault Rifle was based on Counter-Strike's M4A1 assault rifle. Its "price" in the gun's weapon file is the same as the M4A1's, and it references the M4A1 in its "animation" listing. Its firing sounds are slightly modified versions of the sounds used for the M4A1. This is because in real life, the M4A1 is essentially a shorter M16.

It had a different reload animation as well. After replacing the magazine, the player would both pull the charging handle and hit the cocking button.
This site lists the SCAR as the most accurate weapon, which is true if the comparison is based on holding down the trigger mainly because it uses short bursts of fire which prevents bullets from scattering all over from kickbacks but if you are highly trained with the AK then it can be far more accurate with short burts, just like the SCAR.

When i first played L4D 1 & 2, I was hugging the M-16 thinking it was the best gun in the game. Then I tried out the AK and found it to be very inaccurate so I then fell in love with the SCAR because of it's accuracy. Back then I was a trigger happy survivor that liked to mow down infected with adrenaline pumping through my blood. After a while of this type of game play, I decided to tone it down and improve my accuracy and decrease friendly fire and ammo depletion. To do this, I switched to short controlled bursts of fire and shooting only what I CAN hit. Once I switched to this style of shooting and got my hands on the AK again, I realized it was the best suited for my shooting style, next to the sniper rifle. I only use two rifles now, AK and Sniper, due to their accuracy and killing power. Nothing beats them, except maybe the shotty at close range.

I'm not crazy, I can handle any and all weapons and I have had most success with a SCAR. An AK doesn't require much skill either. Works best in crouching. I have used it a lot and you can find me with the most SI and CI kills in almost every game I play when I use it. SCARS work best crouching and running. I have, like nick said, killed a Tank in less than 30 seconds flat on Advanced with this gun on last man on earth. I consider the gun so much better than the other rapid fire guns, that the developers had to give it flaws to match out the positives as Valve is obsessed with trying to balance their gameplay out. Thus we see SCARS taking a long time to reload.

When Eylof sees this thread, he'll have to explain it better to you but I know me and him prefer the SCAR over everything else, and I assure you, if anyone knows their weapons in this game, its Eylof.

The AK has MORE power and can 'flat out' kill a tank in the same amount of time (if not less).

Honestly, though, when it comes to accuracy I don't give a shit about pure-Xbox player opinion (including Eylof) because they just don't have the ability to obtain the same accuracy that a mouse can in the blink of an eye. They are much less likely to have played Valve's counterpart game where the AK-47's power is easily demonstrated not to mention where the design and algorithm governing the AK-47 comes from (with a few modifications).

The AK doesn't require much skill huh? Let's play some CS: S. I'll gladly demonstrate to you just how wrong you are. Think the games are unrelated? Again, I'd be happy to demonstrate just how wrong you are.

Make sure you read up on muddeprived's post because most of what he said (and quoted from the weapon stats) is dead on except this:

which is just friggin' hilarious. The AK-47 WITH a laser sight is unbeatable.

This is one of the few posts where I will assert my opinion as fact.
Your opinion isn't fact at all. I find greater success with a SCAR. Many think AKs and SCARs suck and are Gods at shotguns instead. Is there really a best weapon in general? Is this really, honestly, a pissing contest to you just because I don't choose your favorite gun? This is pure preference if you haven't noticed the thread. I prefer SCAR, I love the way it handles. I have had more success with it, I believe it to have better range from my experiences wielding it. Only time I believe AK to have superior range is when crouched. I have shot Jockeys through walls with SCARs when the Jockey is carrying someone into a hall or another room, so I can't debate better penetration is I have had equal amounts of success with both in that category.

Whether you like it or not, I prefer the SCAR, its my weapon of choice. I find it better to handle. In my experience I have had more success. Just as someone like TeenRacer hates shotguns, he simply just finds M-16s and Uzi's better to handle and he's had better experience with it, and he's a PC player.

Personally I think people highly overrate the AK. No one ever gives the SCAR any credit, whatsoever, and I'm giving it to the weapon now: Its my preferred/favorite/best weapon.

I don't think you care about anyone's opinion who even plays 360 anyway. I don't really care about your's either as it seems like what you're playing is much different than what I'm playing so its no loss. If I had PC version I MIGHT change my mind, but the SCAR feels better with an actual controller in my hand. Everyone agrees with AK because its a fucking AK-47. Everyone knows that gun. Back in Kindergarten even 5 year olds talked about how cool the AK-47 is. Hell, fanboys of L4D always whined and cried for an AK before Left 4 Dead 1 even came out. I honestly am not suprised at the poll.

You're wrong about one thing though, I have gamed on the PC and I AM quite good at both. Whats stopping me from being a full blown PC player is a good PC. I play much older games on this one. I played Halo 2 and Unreal/Unreal Tournament. Do you know how well I used to dominate those games on the PC? Well lemme put it this way: Would you have been pissed to see a 12-13 year old destroy you and everyone else every game you have with said kid? Playing Unreal Tournament, that was always the case years ago.

I may not have played Counterstrike, but back in the day, I rocked the PC. I have no clue how well I do now with it, but I'm a very quick learner.

Next time I go do some rare game shopping, I'm just getting L4D for the PC then and have my brother in law (computer technician) fix up a PC for such an ocassion. I have gotten SO fucking spoiled because of L4D anyway. I cannot enjoy any other FPS I ever pick up anymore even if I do well in them. From Halo to Gears of War to Call of Duty, I just do not enjoy them as much as L4D. In short, in this argument you inspired me to at LEAST do one thing. Go back to PC gaming.

Alright, well, I hate coming in to a thread when an argument is already extended. I'll tackle the issue of sensitivity and accuracy first.

The Xbox 360's games, when compared to their versions on the PC, are highly inferior when it comes to accuracy due to, mainly, sensitivity. Most 360 games lack high sensitivity, and the only game that comes to mind that you can set your sensitivity to a reasonable amount if Modern Warfare 2 (and the other CoD games). IW did a good job in that department, at least.

Let's take Left 4 Dead. At max sensitivity settings, you still get piss-poor results. I keep jolting and wanting to break my joy stick because of how bad it was. And then there's Fallout 3. Damn, the sensitivity sucked. Sucked monkey fuck.

At any rate, the more you master higher sensitivity, coupled with reaction time, the better you become with accuracy. 95% of 360 games give a horrid handicap on sensitivity.

Then let's go to the actual issue at hand; all weapons are inferior in comparison to the AK-47. It's slightly more accurate than the Scar, yet can dish out more damage at less ammo cost. Need to snipe some assholes half way across the map? AK-47 burst fire. Surrounded by hundreds upon hundreds of CI? Rambo-mode. Scar can't do those two.
AK-47 is a beyond godly weapon, and can bring the wrath of Satan with a laser sight.

I knew Kagato wouldn't be able to take part in any argument without bringing up counter strike.
I knew Valve wouldn't be able to take part in any game without being the makers of Counter-Strike.
