Newish to BF2.. few questions
Well... I am thinking of starting to play BF2 again.. I played back in the day
I only have up to special forces so I don't really know how it works as far as other expansions and stuff.
Like... if i have one expansion and others have better ones can they use different guns on the maps i have that I can't?
If you have any insight please post

There are some unlocks that are only available with the SF expansion. If you have the SF expansion you get 2 unlocks every time you reach a rank that allows unlocks, but without SF you only get one. None of the other expansions have additional unlocks, none are hosted by TTP, and they really don't have much of a player base to speak of.
If you have the vanilla BF2 and SF you are good to go for unlocks and TTP, unless you decide to venture into PR, but that is a free DL too.

Re: Newish to BF2.. few questions
The only weapon upgrades are the ones associated with the Special Forces Expansion pack. So nobody will have access to weapons you don't. TTP only plays the stock maps so no issue there. If you've got your game patched up then you are good to go.

Re: Newish to BF2.. few questions
You only need SF to get the unlocks for the G36E, which is why most people will play SF for a bit. You must unlock the L85 first in BF2 before you can unlock the G36E, however. Once you unlock the G36E you can use it in BF2. Hope that answers your question.

Re: Newish to BF2.. few questions
If you have SF and have played at least one round to completion (earned some points), you get two unlocks instead of one every time you rank up. So for your first rank up, you could select the L85 and the G36E from the medic kit if you wanted. If you get SF later, you will get a bunch of unlocks at once (if you had six, you will get six more). The only way to get ALL the unlocks (two levels for each and every kit) is to have SF.
That's how it worked for me.
