Re: Am I good or lucky?
Epic fail. Per scrolling rules on the server, no fighting commanders. There was a full server, no reason whatsoever to be fighting.
I'm amazed at some of the comments. If the round had been lost we'd be saying "Because you were fighting and not commanding" but since the round was one we think it's OK? That's a big negatory ghost rider.

Re: Am I good or lucky?
I cant see the video at work but to comment on a commander defending the titan as a general concept:
There are cases where a fighting commander can be an acceptable Teamplayer while not following the strict letter of the rules.
I have on countless occasion assisted in the defense of the titan as a commander. It is second nature to me. When the shields are down I go hang out with the defense squads and if and when necessary throw back the defenders.
This can be easy if your holding a majority of the silos or fully assaulting and your team doesnt need much direction.
The key of course would be communication and the ability to immediately switch back to the commander role full time if it becomes necessary.
Yes the rule scrolls that we do not tolerate fighting commanders, but there are occasions where fighting as a commander is acceptable.

Re: Am I good or lucky?
Yeah, I don't see the problem with the fact that he was fighting... the problem I was addressing is that the time he spent usin his shotty and running around talking to his SLs could/('should' in my opinion) have been spent callin out troops to the folk on the ground, sat trackin, emping the walker on 4 (or at least checkin on the situation to determine the right mode of action).. stuff like that.
The commander is given a unique seat and only a set of tools that he can use - since there is only 1 commander, every drop of his advantage should be utilized as often as possible. If my assets are recharging, I'm at least doing random 'Spot' checks at key points or on the enemy/allied titan.
I don't criticize the 'fighting' part: I play as an aggressive commander too if my TitanD squad hasn't gotten in yet, or if they're getting absolutely swarmed - but even then, I'm simply filling in until I can get that 2nd backup D squad. Talking to your squads is good and all.. but with no intel, you're just being moral support. Not going to say you did a bad job - I think you probly did a great job. But if I'm going to give my opinion on this video, it seems like the commanding didn't win the round. I could be wrong though, your squadleaders were obviously happy with your work and this is only 2 and half minutes of gameplay anyway.
The question was "Am I good or lucky": Your team won, that would be my answer.

Personally, unless the situation is totally dire and a few extra mines or medic boxes might be neccessary, I tend to sit in the hangar and command in the command screen. I am just not that good of a multi-tasker. I have, however, dropped out of the command screen and podded to the titan roof to kill beacons/transports, as well as jumpin in the titan guns and killing APCs, or APMing vents to help take some of the pressure from the defending squad. I've seen plenty of commanders who are better able to multitask and be more active in battle, especially if its doing some defense on the titan, but are still able to do it without neglecting their team.
The key question is: Are they commanding? If they're commanding, then they're fine.  I saw a comment above about Pyro saying one of his walker's went down... what exactly is the CO supposed to do about that? Drop him another?  Could he have sent a supply crate? Sure, but chances are if the walker went down, it would have went down regardless.
In this instance, Wats was still commanding. He was not neglecting his team, he was not using commander assets to pad his own KDR stats.

To answer the original question: a bit of luck and skill. Not the most attentive commanding I've seen but communicated enough to keep objectives relavent. As far as fighting commander, defending the titan is acceptable teamplay for a commander. I have done the same many times without neglecting commander duties. When there are minimum players on the server I will even cap and keep the closest silo to the titan.
Final Answer: Without good SLs and squads we would have easily lost the round.
Regards,
Pyro
