Banning for leaving the Commander seat?

Thank you Civil, this was the precise scenario that I had in mind as a counter-point to this "unwritten rule". I've spent plenty of time both commanding and squad leading in BF2. I doubt you will find many people who will say that I'm a sub-par commander, and as a squad leader I do a good enough job when it comes to capping flags.

So, here's the situation: I step up to command at the beginning of the round, and half-way through the game I can tell that our team will loose because our squad leaders as a whole are simply not competent enough to defeat the other team.

Am I a non-teamplayer if I say "We need boots on the ground that can accomplish something to get us out of this box," leave the commander seat, put together a squad, and go cap flags so that my team has a fighting chance?

Now, I feel as though that falls under the umbrella of team play. However, based off of w4jchosen's post, it is a kickable/bannable offense. So, something in there needs to be reconciled.

Is it frustrating to not have squads performing their duties? Sure, but it is just as frustrating to see a regular to our server(s) throw their hands up and quit. Vacating the commander slot violates the basic tenants of what we stand for at TTP.

Given some reflection, here's what I'm starting to think is the inherent problem with this rule in this situation: There is a tipping point between when good squad leaders are necessary for the success of the team, and when a good commander is necessary for the success of the team. If I am both a competent squad leader and a competent commander, shouldn't I be doing what's in the best interest of the team?

My suggestion would be to re-word w4jchosen's post to read something like:
"If you vacate the Commander slot during a round for personal gain, you will be kicked, temp banned or perm banned depending on how often the admins see it happening."

Then, the scenario I outlined above seems to be in the clear, while things like commanders resigning to take a vehicle or to at least get some kills in before their team looses are still kickable/bannable offenses.

Or, if there's no better way to re-word that rule, then I am in for a wonderful session of team-playing theory education. :3

Does it allow commanders to leave the seat? Yes.

That's how the game was meant to be played. TTP style.

Players are also allowed by the game to play un-squadded.

IMO it falls into the teamplay category. It sucks when someone fills the spot at the begining,then bails on the team because their toys are gone,or their team is losing and their points aren't going to be doubled. There is nothing worse than finding out the CO has bailed by losing Airfield,Mosque,T.V.,or some other high-value flag.

But unsquadded players can't communicate with other players. THAT is where the teamplay rule is a good fit. Leaving the commander seat is a bad fit, and TTP isn't a cheap suit.

It's conditional; if it's habitual, if it's obvious that it's done in furtherance of personal goals or glory to the detriment of the team, it will be dealt with. You guys are acting as though the admins have nothing better to do than to watch you like a hawk and smite you from on high the instant you leave the seat.

That's quite an assumption.

Your admins are playing with you ... many of them ... often. If they are doing their job they will catch the non-teamplaying fools and rid the servers of them.

My question is: why is this a BF2 rule but not a 2142 rule? One came before the other. Of course, if it is not a rule in 2142, then why is it a rule in BF2?
