Curious facts about shellfish
So, here is the dilemma
You're in a tank and defending one Silo on your own, you're shield is down and you've just hit a gunship.
In the sky, you see an enemy transport with guys comming right on you're silo while the gunship turns around and charges you back. You have 3 sec to choose witch one you shoot, the gunship or the transport.
If you choose the transport option, It is SURE that the gunship kills you, so you'll die with your tank and try to spawn back on the silo. If you succeed hitting the transport, you MIGHT blow it off with the enemy preventing podders on your silo. Still, there are chances that it might survive and lay some guys on your road.
If you choose the gunship option, it is Sure at 100% that you'll destroy the gunship but the transport will have time to drop podders (he might drop them) on the ground and you might be stuck with guys against you're tank in an non-friendly area. You won't be dead, giving you a 10sec bonus to defend the silo, and you'll have only your tank to repel the enemies.
Witch one do you shoot? you have 3 sec to think...

if the transport on/near the silo, I shoot the transport. if it's a ways away, I try for the gunship 1st. An exploding transport (post-tank impact) is radial enough to wipe out anyone near it, so even if they have time to land.. the following explosion will finish the job or give me enough time to atleast spawn back in.

Tactically speaking the Transport. If you kill it with all the folks on-board then you will have plenty of time to spawn back to the silo after the gunship kills you. Although I really enjoy taking out a gunship with a tank <squeal of glee>.

Try for the gunship. Whether I miss or not, I exit the tank and clear the silo. This allows the transport to land and/or drop podders on the silo. I then blow the strategically placed RDX all around the silo thereby effectively defending the silo.

Even with my status as a founding and voting member of the anti-red gunship club, 90% of the time on a map with gunships present, I will have my SAAW with me. I would jump out of whatever and go for the transport.
Why?
Because a gunship is much more agile and can take crucial seconds to acquire lockon. Transports, not so much, I can blind fire 2 shots at them or in their path and pray that someone else 'pre-damaged' them before they got to my silo since it takes 3 SAAW hits to kill a healthy transport. Besides, I may have motion mines in the area that they could be landing on to finish the job.
But ohhhhhhh, I'll be hoping that the gunship is hanging out nearby

Actually, that's the thing, because you're not sure if you will kill the transport but you're sure of killing the gunship.
So, in the real situation, I took the transport option. Shoot at it and get killed by the gunship. I managed to kill one guy in that transport but no to destroy it. It seems like I scared away the transport from the silo. I spawn back thinking that there would be 5 guys on it just waiting for me and then, miraculously, no one... too calm...this ain't good, I waited 30sec standing in the middle of the road and realise that no one podded ... no one jumped from the transport or the gunship, there was only me ... in the desert on the road.
