my point is that they should have built a damn GUI interface that interacts with the engine AS they built the engine.

No doubt...but we take what we can get. The more user friendly, the better.

this goes directly in the face of history. new engine...new game...new platform.... = not going to improve.

once again, it's developers that don't bother to play their own game post release, or see what it means to keep it running.

Yes, but considering this was console only prior to now, there's definitely a lot of benefit to them fixing it now. Both BFBC2 and BF1943 are test beds for the DICE developers on the PC platform for the Frostbyte engine. There was no need for the admin interface prior to now because the console platform didn't have server admins. This is a learning exercise for them and they appear to at least be listening at this point. They saw the backlash against MW2. They know what their PC platform fans want because they offered it in other titles in this series. The BFBC2rcon guys have acknowledged that DICE is listening and working with them to improve the rcon protocol.

I'm cautiously optimistic because everything they learn from BFBC2 and BF1943 will hopefully be applied to the next major BF series title on PC. They have shown at least some aptitude of learning from mistakes. Look at the improvements made to gameplay, balance and teamwork between BF2 and 2142. It's night and day.

I'm not cautiously optimistic. I'm wondering why the clock of history only started ticking with this release, when things like BF2CC and other admin mods have been in use for decades for online games. If you play online, then you are aware there are admins, with powers, and those powers come from admin mods.

So.....why make a game that doesn't have an admin mod? Why continue to repeat the mistakes from the past? The greatest admin mods ever made came out of games that were essentially mods themselves, or open source enough to give mod developers the access they needed to make something great.

All we see now it the continuing lack of access and information, which I understand and respect for the sake of anti-cheating and consistency, but with ZERO effort to produce the functions that rise our of the openness of previous game engines.

Relying on the public to make something that is an absolute requirement for the game to be managed and played properly online.....which is the POINT of their game........is ridiculous. Like I said, it would be the same as relying on the public to make the server browser, or to make skins and models, or to make the rest of the maps and only ship it with one.

    Either it's a staple, and a must-have for a game to survive.....or it's not. I say it is.

There is no such thing as server admins on most console games (and specifically, Battlefield:Bad Company). This is a continuation of a series and an engine originally created for a console platform. DICE is working with their testing partner to try and achieve what you want. This is their first go 'round on PC with this engine. It's nothing like previous engines. While yes, they should have worked on the rcon protocol before this, it's better they're doing it now then after release. If things haven't improved by release date, which is still a month away, then yes, they should be criticized and shunned.

As it stands now, they have a fairly functional alpha console and are working with DICE to make it more functional and flexible like most of us in the PC gaming world expect. In the end, I think we'll be in better shape with whatever the BC2BCrcon guys come up with than we are now with the current BF2CC and 2142CC.

    Which is irrelevant.

you don't walk into the market on a new platform, and use such an excuse. You look at what's out, you do your homework, and you get up to speed. Just becuase it's THEIR first game doesn't mean it's THE first game to be made PC. If we held companies to such a weak standard, then there would be NO progress in gaming, and rather, just cute repetition of the same egregious mistakes.

What's next? they come in, and don't add the ability to use a mouse and keyboard, since "it was a console game" and expect us all to use game pads?

come on man.....you are the definition of a blind, following, excuse making fanboy. Ask frag how that worked out in FFOW.

It's inexcuseable, and you know it. So stop making excuses for them. They aren't your family, and they aren't here to see you defend them. Admin mods, and the need for them, are common knowledge in PC online gaming. Period. IF they make a PC game, then just like all the other bells and whistles PC games require...an admin mod should have been on that list. Or at least the console-RCON ability for it, which it seems they are either reluctant to add, or had no idea they needed to add.

An indication of an absolute disconnect between the developer and the gamer. And that's just bad business.

    exactly.

I'll stand by it. If a developer is going to play the "oh, it's our first time doing anything, ever" card, they only get credit if no one else has preceded to show them everything that is required to do their job. Source, CoD, and BF games are what people are playing. and all of those games have functional admin mods. All of which, of course, came out of the community.

however...if you were to sort those mods by order of quality, you'd show a direct correlation between that and the age of the game they mod. Things were different back then. Now...with the closed doors the dev's have.....there is no community that's able to make these mods at the rate in which we need them, need them to be updated, and need them to be distributed.

And so....the game gets a bum rap simply because the tools we need to properly configure them, rotate them, stabilize them, police them, and manage them are not available.

    AA3 anyone?
