    Frustrating .....

Maybe some of ya'll can tell me what is going on here. I start BF2, go to favorites and find ya'll. Nice ping, usually between 96-105. Log into game, play for a while - and things gradually get laggy, and more laggy, until POOF! "There is a problem with your connection." - and next thing I know "You have lost connection to the server." Check favorites again and now the ping is ungodly - anywhere between 546 and 2147 or more!

This happens in ANY server I go to - but ONLY in BF2! CoD2, any other game - whatever the starting ping is it remains the same throughout that session. Any ideas?

FWIW, I am in Phoenix area and my ISP is Cox.

Have you done any speed test to see what speeds you are getting? Are you sure you don't have any viruses? I have the same thing happening at home and come to find out it is because my wife's laptop is hogging the bandwidth with something, I will be investigating it tonight. I only found this when she shut off her computer and my pings stabilized to low teens.

If your have a Wireless Network.

Check your wireless router by either using a self diagnostic program thats comes with it or simply replace it with another router and observe your connectivity closely.

If you still have issues, contact your ISP and usually the will look at your conntection to see if your modem is receiving a weak signal from their service line outside your home or if your dropping network packets.

If everything still looks at this point. Time to do full system maintence check on your pc.

Run a tracert on your system, see if there is any bottle necks between you and the server...

    Re: Frustrating .....

    1) Everyone else in the house uses a wireless router, but mine is the master and is directly connected by cable.

    2) Standard ping tests show that all IP addresses are stable - even yours. As I said in the first post, this doesn't happen to ANY other online play - ONLY BF2.

    3) Cox doesn't see any problem either - see point 2.

    4) PC checks out via every test I know - and I used to be IT before being unemployed! Full McAfee anti-virus suite, backed up by MalWare AND Ad-Aware. Runs a full sweep every morning (0300) while I sleep - WHEN I sleep! LOL!

    Added:
    5) Tracert shows a steady 9 hops at 50ms average. IP is 207.210.254.226:16568 correct?

Have you tried killing your firewall (temporarily of course) and all that av stuff to see if there is some conflict?

I know that PunkBuster B only starts when you are on a server,so something may be stopping it?

well pnkbstrB crashing will cause the server to kick you with a PB kick, not just lose connection and/or have a horrible ping...

It could be your modem is dying. Are you running other connection-intensive apps, like bittorrent or something? Do those negatively affect your speeds generally? The gradual onset seems like some resource somewhere is getting exhausted over time then poof, you exceed a threshold of usability. Does rebooting your modem after things turn crappy help at all?

    Re: Frustrating .....

Nothing seems to do anything for it - sometimes in sheer frustration I hit the big red button and do a total reboot - no change. I have to go play CoD2 or something else for a while, then come back - sometimes it's good, sometimes not. Yet ALWAYS the ping and tracert look good - and as I've said, it only affects BF2 - if it was the modem dying it would affect other online stuff as well. And as for maxing out the connection, most of the time I am the only one on - I watch the bandwidth very well when everyone else is home and accessing. And while I am playing my games, I have nothing else using that bandwidth - no torrent downloads, WinXP/McAfee/anything else auto-updates turned off - the usual suspects. I suspect something in BF2/Punkbuster IS getting exhausted - which is why I came to this forum.
