CD-keys are different than accounts. Your account isn't tied to any specfiic CD-key; you could log in to any copy of BF2 with your account name/password (and, if you've forgotten the password, recovering/resetting it is easy). All your time and stats are tied to the account.
CD-keys identify the unique copy of the game on which you're playing. In terms of a normal player, that doesn't really matter at all (moreso for admins, but cross bridges when you get to them). You may buy to your heart's content. Also, BF2 is now available on Steam, should that tickle your fancy. Always downloadable, automatically updated, and no need to keep around that little booklet or it's insidiously-easy-to-lose code. All kept for you.
