BF3 DLC Bonus
How is there not already a thread dedicated to this?
[BF3] EA Under Fire for Battlefield 3 Pre-Order Bonus
If you preorder the game, you get 4 extra maps and exclusive weapons/accessories. Otherwise, you have to buy this "expansion pack" to play these maps. Apparently preorders exclusively get a flash suppressor and improved armor-piercing ammo that will not be obtainable in game without the preorder, even if you buy the expansion.
Demize99: The Physical Warfare Pack is fully exclusive. There's no other way to get those 4 items.
I see it causing problems similar to 2142, where when the map switches to a Northern Strike map, half the server drops. Either that, or you have to leave the maps out of the rotation to maintain server population.
Either way, charging extra for maps definitely not something I am a fan of.
A poll on their forums about the subject:
Exclusive Weapons/Maps. WHY? - Battlefield 3 General Discussion - Battlefield 3: EA Forums
Reddit on the subject:
EA and DICE are chopping Battlefield 3 into store-specific pre-order DLC. Weapons and gear are being cut out of the core game and made exclusive. Say hello to the Physical Warfare Pack and goodbye to the T88 LMG, the first of many to come. : gaming
Reddit also seems to be trying to organize a boycott (which apparently also happened with BC2):
Battlefield 3 pre-order DLC BOYCOTT coordination : reddit.com
In case you've forgotten, EA tried this same crap with Bad Company 1. And gamers boycotted it. And you know what? It worked. EA changed it. : gaming

Re: BF3 DLC Bonus
I really hate this practice, but sadly it's becoming more common.
But what irritates me far more is the fact that we don't know about ANYTHING ELSE. What content is in, you know, the ordinary game that you don't pay extra for--Or is Battlefield 3 merely a platform you have to buy which allows you to purchase various pieces of content which sort of form a game when fully assembled?
Since E3, we learned a small bit about one map and a couple weapons the demo classes were using by default. Which is hardly anything alone, but before that we didn't even know anything else but herp derp preorder bonus.

Re: BF3 DLC Bonus
Getting huge benefits for preordering is a trend that is continually getting worse. Wanna give me an earlier start than everyone for doing it? Cool. Wanna give me a weapon before I would ALREADY earn it a few levels later? Cool. But when exclusive content and the maps like that begin to happen there is a problem.
Speed. I am speed.

If the weapons are anything like BC2 (and I'm sure they are) the DAO and Type 88 LMG will end up being re-skinned versions of other weapons. For example, the USAS-12 and Saiga have the same exact damage profiles and firing rates. The 870, SPAS-12 and Neostad all have the same exact damage profile, and slightly different (not huge) firing rates. The other things like the flechette ammo and flash suppressor aren't game-changers.
This isn't really a surprise. They need to throw that carrot out there to get people to blindly buy a game based on a bunch of pre-alpha footage and promises. They make a ton of money before the game is even out. It's another reason why I don't see them selling the game on Steam. They don't make the same profit margin via Steam and they need a major title to launch their Origin service.
Typical EA... anyone thinking this is anything new needs to wake up.
