Mars Map Prototype
Hello Lurkers! As promised, here is the second phase of the LM Nationstates expansion. As the thread title suggests, this expansion will occur on Mars, and a few other little nifty places I've picked out for use at this time.
There are less than 10 open territories on the LM Regional Map of Earth. This means that we will lose our ability to add new players. Therefore, all new players will start on Mars or on any one of ten moons that have been selected. We will ignore the specifics of how human life may have originated there; instead, we will just accept that there are humans there who have developed their own sovereign nations.
This will also allow for colonization by other nations that have already staked their claim in the Regional Map. Rules for colonization will be different for those rules for those nations who will start as indigenous to whatever planet/moon they start off on.
First, the guide map of Mars (just a reference):
This map is Asia, just rotated upside down. We shall be using the same country names as you will find in the real world, however take note that China, India, and Russia have been cut up into smaller parts. These parts have been named so as to distinguish them (I took the names from actual places on the real planet Mars).
This is the actual map we will be using:
Rules for Indigenous Nations
An indigenous nation is any nation that starts off anywhere not on Earth. They receive special rules to help facilitate their growth. Unfortunately, they will not be as forgiving as those afforded to those nations who were able to be a part of the first regional map. I apologize, but it could not be avoided. Your nation will unfortunately be smaller on Mars than it could have been on Earth. We will be basing growth based upon how powerful your economy is (as opposed to population size).
In NS, the economic status relates to how economically powerful a nation is. There are fifteen levels of status. In order from greatest to least:
- 1. Frightening (7)
- 2. All-Consuming (6)
- 3. Powerhouse (6)
- 4. Thriving (5)
- 5. Very Strong (5)
- 6. Strong (4)
- 7. Good (4)
- 8. Fair (3)
- 9. Reasonable (3)
- 10. Developing (2)
- 11. Struggling (2)
- 12. Weak (2)
- 13. Fragile (2)
- 14. Basket Case (1)
- 15. Imploded (1)
We will use your status to A) determine which territory you can start from, and how many territories (that all border one another) you can have total. This is the number listed in parentheses to each economic status above.
The following is a list of the territories and their relation to economic status, as based on their size:
Now, when you go ahead and start a nation on Mars, your starting location will be in relation to your economic status. Take for example my nation, the Empire of Man. I want to start a new nation on Mars, and I have an economic rating of Very Strong. So, that means I can start off in either Utopia Planitia or Mongolia. You can start off in any other territory that is listed in a group below Very Good/Thriving (meaning I could pick a nation in the Fair/Reasonable group). I decide to chose Utopia Planitia. As having Very Strong economic rating, I can have a total of five territories. My starting territory (otherwise known as your capital) counts as one, so I can chose four more that border my territory and "cost" less than my Very Strong status. This means that I could purchase any territory within the Very Strong group and below, but not the Powerful, All Consuming or Frightening groups, as they are larger. I decide to purchase Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaya. There is my nation.
Later on, if I gain a more powerful economic status, I can add additional territories to my realm. So, if (for example) I have an economic rating of Very Strong and I improve to Frightening, I can purchase two additional territories. If my economic rating goes below Very Strong, it has no effect on how many territories I control (so I don't lose any for taking a hit to my economy). No nation may exceed a total of seven territories. You are allowed to conquer neighboring territories, but you may only ever buy a grand total of seven.
Colonies
The rules for colonies are much different than those relating to the rules for indigenous nations. They are significantly more limiting and stricter in their application. This is designed to keep big nations on the LM Map from gobbling up the whole of Mars and keeping new players from having a home.
First, for a nation to build a colony on Mars, they must have a declared space program in place (not just a random, hidden one; the issue must come up in NationStates, and you must accept it). You can't get to Mars if you don't have a ship to get your colonists there.
Second, you are limited to a starting location, as with the indigenous nations. These are identical to the ones for the indigenous nations (again based upon economic status), however the total number of territories one can buy is much smaller. They are as follows:
- Frightening (2)
- All Consuming, Powerhouse (2)
- Thriving, Very Strong (2)
- Strong, Good (1)
- Fair, Reasonable (1)
- Developing, Struggling, Weak, and Fragile (0)
- Basket Case, Imploded (0)
Any nation may not have more than two territories in its colony. They most border each other. As with the Indigenous nations, if you have (i.e.) a Strong economy and improve to a Very Strong economy, you may purchase an additional territory. Again, you can only purchase territories within or below your economic group.
Okay, that's all. Have fun!
