My opinion is people don't buy or play ARMA (well generally), is because it is fairly complicated, and well slow. Now there is certainly a niche genre that loves the type of game it is (the teamwork, its complexity, its realism, etc.), like there is for HoI type strategy games, but I doubt it will ever go mainstream. To me, I feel PR did the same thing, sure it was always a slower pace game, but when I first remember playing it it kept the fun, it wasn't overly complicated etc. The last time I played it, it seemed like they want way too far and the thing was just a pain in the ass to play.
To me BF2 had a decent balance, sure I had some things I REALLY hated about it, but it kept a good balance between not being overly arcadey but not going so far you need a 1,000 page manual to figure out how to shoot a gun.
Of course, personally I think a major issue is the fact, which we don't admit much here, majority of the FPS market doesn't give two craps about teamplay, its all about killing a bunch of people and padding K:D. Teammate dying? Fuck him, too busy camping for kills. I'm crazy bias, but when I see the newest cookie cutter CoD come out and break sales records, it pretty much shows me that people who give a shit about teamplay are a vast minority now (that and people who like singleplayer stories that are longer then 30 minutes are also long gone).Last edited by Red_Lizard2; 11-01-11 at 10:36 PM.

Go to their forums and find the threads about the 1.6 beta patch, it has a netcode fix in there that fixes the warping and lagging that ArmA is known for. Trust me, it makes playing the game a MILLION times better online. The Project Reality mod for ArmA has made it finally so there is player vs player servers, not players vs. one shot laser accurate bots that hit you from 2000 meters away with an AK.

Re: I told you so!
This is probably the most overlooked aspect of BF2 (and 1942, Vietnam, and 2142, for that matter) ever. I didn’t start playing the BF franchise for the teamplay – and I bet a lot of others didn’t either. Heck, 1942 and Vietnam didn’t even have VOIP. What they did have was the best balance between arcade and simulation gameplay that I’ve ever experienced. That along with the vehicle depth, map size, and player scale are what endeared me so much to 1942. They are the core values which have kept me playing these games for so long.
Of course, BF2 took the franchise’s teamwork aspect to a whole new level. Squad’s feel mandatory now, and so does VOIP, but there are workarounds available for the latter to those who are willing to seek them out (as TS for this very server demonstrates).
I think if EA/Dice stick to what I believe are the core values and continue to throw in the fancy eye candy, they’ll be able to package together something that both the BF fans like and and still make some big-time cash in the process. The lack of team-support would still disappoint me, but it would be enough to keep me interested. I just hope they don’t go off and cater to those COD-types exclusively. Then we’re dooooooooooooomed.Last edited by cornfuse; 11-01-11 at 11:09 PM.
