Re: Do you think the server should switch to smaller map sizes?
No idea.
I've always had the impression I was one of the very very few that liked blue pearl.
Guess I'm not alone!
Well. I am alone.
On the server.
But someone likes blue pearl with me in spirit!"The bravery of idiots is bravery none the less."

I too really enjoy Blue Pearl :-D. It's a close quarters urban warfare map with all kinds of corners to hide/sneak in. Frankly I also enjoy the 64 person size with the grueling entry by the US; it's a very hard start for US, but it is in the spirit of similar challenges (like d-day), and the frankly US has Many other maps with easy starts. Nunya even has the 16 person Blue Pearl map (on their 64 player server) - which makes the close quarters battle even more intense. Those battles end in just a few minutes.
I'm looking forward to enjoying the smaller maps this weekend :-D when I can come up for air (a little - finals are upon us).

Actually I don't think that switching entirely to smaller maps is a good idea.
The best idea would be only to start with small maps. And then, if for example there are more that 20 players online, programmatically set the next maps for the 64 players size.
This can be done with a couple of lines in a script (the same which can shuffle map list every day).
BF2 server is made very very flexible. We can do a lot of great things with it.
I'm lobbying this small change for a very long time, and I just don't understand why administration cannot push the hoster a little bit.
Every other server can make their games customizable, and why can't we?
This is extremely important, cause we're talking about the actual survival of the server here.
And it's in our hands to make it live via implementation of a simple python script on the server side.ARKOUDAKI liked this post

Re: Do you think the server should switch to smaller map sizes?
It has less to do with the host, and more to do with EA. They are really strict with the ranked boxes. And, compared to the newer games (BC2 and BF3), they are lenient with BF2.....we can't do shiite with the new games. The chastity belts are impenetrable.
But........we don't need the script. We have admins. Admins who can change the map to whatever they see fit. We have 9 maps loaded up in the 32 player size, and will be using those until there are ~20ish peeps on the server, then they will switch to the bigger ones.
And no, Jim.....every server CAN'T make their games customizable....not if they are ranked. This isn't something we can "push" for. The server isn't dead because of a stale rotation, or because the maps are too big. The server is empty because everyone is playing BF3, and all the Python scripts in the World won't change that. I'm sure that the newness will wear off before too long, and we will start seeing people trickle back in. For now, we will load the smaller maps to help get games going....it's about all we can do.

Jim-
After a re-read with brighter, more awake eyes , I hope I didn't come off as snarky towards you. It certainly wasn't intended. I do appreciate that you cared enough to create a script, and were willing to share it with us. We are lucky to have guys like you around here.
