Re: BF3 and VOIP...
wow! Some things never change. I quit xbox live back in ~2005 and I do recall this being the usual experience with people I don't know. I remember just muting the voice chat whenever possible and pretending it didn't exist because of people like that.
wtf is wrong with people

Re: BF3 and VOIP...
Well, as PC users, we all have the advantage of using technology like TS to fill in the gaps. While overall this isn't the best solution, I think it's part of what makes TPG unique. If it was built in, there'd be fewer things to distinguish what this community and their servers offer. Plus I think teamspeak probably does it better than what's they'd be able to build in the game anyway.
Also, if it was built into the game, I'd imagine we'd have more clueless players on that don't know how to move forward as a squad...
On a side note, I'd like to thank the squads I've been in for putting up with my lack of mic during most of my gameplay. My wife works at home during the evenings in our office where we have our computers and internet. So unfortunately, I can't always be on mic. However, I'm almost always on TS and listening. She wants to know what I want for Christmas. I'd like my own office but our house is too small for that .

There are actual legit business concerns that deal with this. I've done proprietary-licensed 3rd party integration and bundling before, and we got sued over it nevertheless (not my fault though!). Remember on the consoles, EA gets to access the PSN and XBL voip APIs as part of developing for those platforms, but they don't necessarily need access to source or deployment or codecs or anything from Sony/MS. They also have reduced support requirements. They might not have been able to get a license to use the voip stack from BF2/2142 (I don't remember who they licensed codec, servercode, and codecs from, but I know it was licensed from another company and they didn't write it) and apply it to BF3. Obviously the BC2 voip doesn't work well on PC so they just didn't include it. You might say "they are too lazy to fix the VOIP in BC2 and stick it in BF3" but again, if it's going to take more than 1 FTE to work on it and solve all the "help my voip doesn't work" help requests, it probably just isn't worth the cost both from a development or a support budget perspective. (Remember Don’t Call Yourself A Programmer, And Other Career Advice | Kalzumeus Software put it best: extra programmers and tech support staff add overhead and count as a cost center to the beancounters!)
