Thread: BF3 and VOIP...

VOIP would most likely create better long run value for EA/Dice, I agree with that. More features means people are more likely to buy DLC.
On the other hand while consoles are the leaders right now, PC gaming has had a semi-resurgance, meaning that developers can't really afford to treat us as 'second class citizens'.
I really agree with Cajun on this one, we are a minority of gamers who want the ability to easily talk to people in our squad, not just a few people on our friends list. As a result our want for a number of features that would cost EA/DICE money aren't particularly something that they are worried about.
So much for getting some brand loyalty from any of us, EA doesn't balance the $$ with the communities of its games like it should IMOAlundil liked this post

Re: BF3 and VOIP...
The real question is, "How long will TPG host BF3 because of EA/DICE's decision?".
I'm grateful for our TS server, it has really helped the game for me, but it's not an amazing fix.
It's a pain to get people on the TS server, people that are squad leaders are rarely on TS, and to top it off about 1/2 squad leaders wont even use command rose.
Seriously this game becomes less fun every time I play it.
The worst part is, I can see what COULD have been.
If I wanted to just run around shooting things, I could have purchased a single-player shooter, or COD.
I purchased BF3 to play as a team, and accomplish goals.
TL; DR I feel bad, you feel bad, and DICE/EA should feel bad.

Re: BF3 and VOIP...
I think that the real question is this: Do the people who never speak in game voip systems whether it be built in or ts3 ever even use headsets or any mic for that matter?
So in reality I think the people that really do want to talk in game or own a mic will join TS and those who dont most likely never used a mic in game.Last edited by Warprosper; 12-07-11 at 12:24 PM.

This so much. I played BF2 on TTP/TPG for quite a while, and we had tons of people who chose not to squad up, didn't follow the SL orders, and never said a word on mic. Yes, they got kicked for not squadding up, or following orders, and they should in BF3 as well. If you have an SL that is not giving orders then ask him/her to do so, or give up SL. I did the other day, and the guy left, came back, and started working with our squad. He wasn't in TS, but he did the best he could to stick with us, and was typing what he could.
As for a commander, the best commanders I ever played with in BF2 rarely, if ever, gave direct orders. I don't claim to be a great BF2 commander, but 90% of the time with competent SLs all I had to do was offer cars/supplies when available, and manage the UAV and arty. Some of you act like commanders in BF2 were Colin Effing Powell or something. Also, in BF2 I never had communication with other SLs, yet we were almost always able to spread out.
Bottom line is yes, VoIP is nowhere near ideal, but we can still have the exact same game play we had in BF2 if WE will spread out, lead squads, and do the things WE know to do to lead a team to victory.
THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!

There is some trickery that can be done with whisper channels, but whisper channels are a client-side thing and can't be setup on the server-side. So to make it work... you'd need a client-side plugin for TS... which isn't out of the realm of possibilities, but certainly not practical.
