So here's how it went.

I met up with a player gave him pills and then head off again. He decides to become my body guard. I get shot by another player, responded by hooking up with a random player, who decides to go on a suicide mission with me lol, we get into a bitch of a gun fight in the street, the bandits wasted my new friend, and then got destroyed by the zed's, I loop and get a few rounds into the remaining bandit and he limps off. Steg spots and lays fire, I run into the train station with 11 health pass out and he shoots me. We respect after a restart and head out. In electro everything goes nuts. I direct chat and a guy decides to ignore me, but shoots at me later (I kill him), I then had a random tard shoot on sight, with a mak. I tell him he's a tard and kill him too. Then 2 guys get into an awesome gunfight in town, steg and I loot them to become fully geared and then headed to stary.

So here's what I've learnt: players are more apt to help if you are both fresh spawns.
Players are cautious of people running around with direct chat on.
Players that don't respond via chat or voice are going to kos.
When playing the super medic it's best to have an ax, as a crowbar is as useful as detaching your own leg and beating zed's with it.

I actually so the bi plane on server 10... I jacked their car but then made the stupid decision to be nice and give it back because they asked nicely... They killed me as I returned it. So now my mission is to find their plan and attempt to fly and it probably crash it!

Life Tip-
Don't try to be a nice guy for the benefit of others. Be a nice guy for your own personal benefit. You will have a much happier life.
As Billy Joel wrote "...either way, it's ok, you wake up with yourself." At the end of the day, the only person whos opinion of you matters, is you. Be a nice guy to make you happy, and everyone else will follow suit.

As for DayZ.......Kill 'em all, and let Max sort them out. When he is done, kill him too.

In terms of being a hero, I have more fun being an asshole and killing fresh spawns or low geared players and then hearing them bitch and whine, than trying to be friendly and help out only to get shot in the back and hear the little kid laugh. It's survival of the fittest. If you can't get off the coast without being killed, that's your fault. Don't get me wrong it happens to me all the time, but you have to get what you can and head north as soon as possible. Go to a town up north with a less probability of players in it. (Polona, Zelengorsk, etc.)

It's a video game so not sweat off my back for being a dick. When the real zombie Apocalypse happens then I'll consider sparring Maximus's life.

If I'm alone, I am generally peaceful or completely defensive. When I have no one to back me up, preservation of #1 is my only concern, and picking a fight with another player is not the best option available to you. Now, if someone gets close to me or surprises me, chances are not to be taken and that person is going down. Happened to me at the South Barracks and I had to light up a guy who got too close (in my face) with my P90. But right after that, I let a guy in a car go even though I could have taken him out with my G3.

With a group it's a different story. Assessing your situation is the first thing that should be on your mind when running with a group. You can handle one guy easy, but what if he has reinforcements hidden? Other people think the same way we do: set up lookouts to secure the area while someone does the dirty work looting. I'm fine with groups killing on sight, but recklessness is just dumb.

As for killing fresh spawns, I let them get inland so that I can deal with them later, give them a chance to have a fight with me, make things interesting. You can't have a fight with someone if they never leave the coast because you're killing them all the time. Then again, we spend a lot of time well away from the coast anyway.
