Isn't the objective to die in 7 days though?

no, Survive, its an open world sandbox. Build, craft, rebuild, scavenge, craft, learn, KILL!

First off, you'll want to familiarize yourself with crafting.
It's easy now to survive on what you loot, but to progress the game you need to loot, and craft, rinse and repeat.
The Crafting tarp confuses a lot of people. It's partly a puzzle game. You have to figure out what ingredient goes in what space to create which recipe. On some servers the recipe list is customized which can either be a help or a hinderance.

Next you'll want to watch your Stamina and health bars. Stamina can mean death or frustratingly long work.

a walk through of my first seconds in a game.

1. you spawn in. (hopefully on Kanati's server) Move your belt Items to your bag. To open your bag hit "I" (I rebound this to "G", as I is way to far to reach my fingers)
a. On Kanati's server it's set to only drop your Tool belt or "hot bar" on death. so moving your items you can stand to lose there helps.
2. Punch the Grass, to get Long grass. This is a key most players overlook. Long grass can then be converted to Plant fibers by placing them in the center tile of the crafting tarp. This is one ingredient of Stone Axe.
Next either punch small bushes or twigs to get sticks. Easiest by far. And finally pick up the rocks lying around.
Put the rocks in to the crafting grid/tarp. and convert them to "stone", do it again to get 5 Small rocks, Do it again to get Sharp stones. Place sharp stones, sticks and Plant fibers in the corresponding spots to get the Stone Axe.
I usually make 5 in one go, so gather enough to do that. Once I get an Axe, I go town on the grass, Stones and bush, also chopping down some tress and picking up whatever isn't nailed down as well.

Funny thing is, though. I'd been wandering around for a while with nothing but a sharpened stick, and managed to make it into a building undetected.

In the back was a gun safe.

In the gun safe was a Rocket Launcher with 4 rockets, and a sniper rifle. I'm hoping that's good, cause I was never that lucky in DayZ.

in the few times I've played, I've never found that kind of stuff either. Usually there's a pistol in a car after I spawn in but I've never found rockets and sniper rifles.

Looking at the Wiki, the rocket Launcher is a rare find, and so is the ammo. I'll just keep my four rockets safe for the moment. xD

Nvm about the sniper rifle. You use your mouse wheel to zoom in.

End of the days foraging, me and Allane are loaded with guns, he's got a chainsaw, I've got an auger and 8 rockets for my rocket launcher, tons of ammo, and a house built.

I take it that's a no.

Some guy came on the server last night while I was on. His name was Kill You All.

He showed me that pressing "G" on the keyboard toggles Noclip mode, and that Z toggles creative. Thought it might have been you in disguise, but I guess not.
