Planetside. I WAS THERE MAN! (UPDATE PS2 in the Works?)
UPDATE:

Help Us Design the Next PlanetSide Game
That's right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don't worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn't going anywhere.
We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Planetside, then. Do I have any veterans in the audience? At ease, gentlemen.
It might not have dredged up the subscribers Sony were hoping for, and you personally might have found it a disappointment, a bully, a bastard, or most unforgivably, a bore. The developers were perhaps overambitious, and in any case they managed to screw up both on paper and in practice. But their game has achieved one beautiful thing, and that’s the creation of the same invisible veterans’ club that results from a real life war. If you played Planetside you might have already encountered this phenomenon- the mutual respect that instantly exists once you find out someone’s an ex-Planetside player. Since I can’t think of a name for this whole process, I’m going to dub it “I WAS THERE, MAN” syndrome.
[br]Strange
Redeye, Alael and his wife UltimateTurkey were there with me. We kicked much ass and had many a good time. Redeye and I were a pretty formidable Tank crew back in the day.
So sound off. Who was there?
I ran the entire gamut of the beta and managed to enjoy the game enough to pay them for a new or so.
I know how much it sucked in so many ways, but in so many ways it was one of the greatest games I have every played.
I keep hoping someone comes up with a Planetside 2 with far more dramatic terrain to fight over, a more dynamic world and a more meaningful warfare system. A Planetside / World War 2 Online / 2142 mass up could very possibly be the greatest game of all time.

Re: Planetside. I WAS THERE MAN!
Hell yes that was one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had.
Sure it had problems but when you could find a hot spot...the sheer scale of the battle and variety of equipment to use was pretty stunning for the time.
The tank...the vanguard.
We so owned the shit out of everyone in that thing, nobody could handle us. Oh man, thanks for the memories

Re: Planetside. I WAS THERE MAN!
Oh God. I spent so many hours of my life trying to conquer to continents for my faction I can't even remember. I loved this game. Played it from closed beta all the way until they released the first expansion. After that I said, "Screw this." They ruined the game when they released it. Sure it had flaws before, but that one took the cake.
Developer A: "You know what the players would probably like?"
Developer B: "What?"
Developer A: "A super special tank that can destroy anyone and anything in the game, but you can only get it by buying our expansion and then venturing into a crazy underground cavern thing that no one will ever play in!"
Developer B: "Great idea!"

Re: Planetside. I WAS THERE MAN!
I remember when they tried to boost their player population with the reserve program.
It worked.
I have to say, even though you could only get to level 6, you could do a ton with the skills that you already got. You were the regular soldier on the battlefield. You had to stick with the subscribers, play as a team, and fill out specific rolls since you had so few points.
Then they ended it.

Re: Planetside. I WAS THERE MAN!
Ya, it was a good thing, and after a full year most figured the reserve system would exist till they shut the doors, but they killed it.
Hopefully someones working on my Planetside/WorldWar2Online/BF2142/40K mashup
Id love to see what TTP could do in a persistent world shooter
